We have two more new disc reviews for you this afternoon, as well as more announcement news—including a couple of surprise titles. But first those reviews...

Tim has turned in his thoughts on John Lafia’s Child’s Play 2 (1990) in 4K Ultra HD from Scream Factory.

And Dennis has offered his take on Atom Egoyan’s Exotica (1994) on regular Blu-ray from The Criterion Collection.

Now then... the big news today is that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has just made Jordan Peele’s Nope official for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 10/25, with the Digital release due on 9/20. It appears that both the Blu-ray and 4K presentations will feature a variable aspect ratio that shifts between 2.20 and 1.78 to preserve the theatrical IMAX experience. [Read on here...]

We’re back as promised this evening with more upcoming catalog 4K Ultra HD news and rumors from our studio, industry, and retail sources. Keep in mind, some of these titles are not yet officially announced, so the dates and details are subject to change.

First of all, this is a title we’ve known is coming for a few months now and while it’s not yet been officially announced by the studio, we do have the final cover artwork from retailers: Universal Studios Home Entertainment is expected to release their Universal Classic Monsters: Icons of Horror Collection – Volume 2 box set in 4K Ultra HD on 10/11.

The set will include The Mummy (1932), The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Phantom of the Opera (1943), and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). You can see the cover artwork at left and also below.

It’s also believed that the titles in the studio’s Volume 1 set—Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), The Wolf Man (1941), and The Invisible Man (1932)—will finally be released as single-film SKUs, for sure in the UK and possibly in the US as well. All right, sorry for the lack of an update over the last couple of days. We’ve been very busy here at the site, working on reviews, preparing for some big upcoming reviews, and finishing a few more site upgrades. But the major reason is that there’s a ton of breaking and evolving release news to cover, and getting to the bottom of it all—collating all the details, checking in with sources, confirming key pieces of release information—takes a huge amount of time. But I’m always up for a challenge.

Before we get to that, however, let’s share those disc reviews we’ve been working on over the past few days...

First up, I’ve posted my thoughts on John Milius’ Red Dawn (1984) from Shout! Factory and also Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World: Dominion (2022) from Universal, both in 4K Ultra HD.

Tim has delivered a look at Joel Schumacher’s Flatliners (1990) in 4K UHD from Arrow Video, as well as John Carpenter’s Escape from New York (1981) in 4K from Scream Factory.

Dennis has reviewed a number of regular Blu-ray titles in the last few days, including Lon Chaney: Before the Thousand Faces – Volume 2 from Undercrank Productions, Josh and Benny Safdie’s Daddy Longlegs (2009) from Criterion, and Jack Gold’s The Tenth Man (1988) and Ken Hughes’s The Trials of Oscar Wilde (1960) from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And finally, Stephen has delivered in-depth looks at Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon (1997)—a Steelbook release that’s getting hard to find here in the States—and Jeff Fowler’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) both in 4K Ultra HD from Paramount, along with Michael Findlay’s Shriek of the Mutilated (1974) on Blu-ray from American Films via Vinegar Syndrome.

We’ve got a great new disc review for you this afternoon, and we’ve got some significant release news to report as well. First up, that review...

Tim has just turned in his in-depth look at Rod Serling’s Night Gallery: Season Two (1971-1972) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics as expected. Sounds like it’s another great release that’s loaded with special features, including audio commentary on many episodes. Don’t miss it.

Now then... file this in the “better late than never” category, but Universal has finally made their Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and Digital release of Colin Treverrow’s Jurassic World: Dominion official, and it is indeed expected to street next Tuesday (8/16). Extras on the Blu-ray SKUs will include the Battle at Big Rock short film, the A New Breed of VFX featurette, and the multi-part Dinosaurs Among Us: Inside Jurassic World Dominion 45-minute documentary. You’ll also get both the Theatrical Version and a new 14-minute longer Extended Edition, which includes an alternate opening and more.

Both Blu-ray SKUs will include DTS-X object-based surround sound, and the 4K Ultra HD release will feature both HDR10 and Dolby Vision high dynamic range. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below. [Read on here...]

We’ve got more announcement news for you today, starting with the big one...

Paramount has just set 1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story for Blu-ray and DVD release on 8/30. The Paramount+ series stars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Isabel May. The release will include all 10 episodes along with two hours of featurettes (among them A Land of Peril & Wonder: The Journey of 1883, From Cast to Cowboys: Creating the Pioneer Spirit, 1883: The Road West, Inside 1883, and Behind the Story for each episode). You can see the cover artwork at left and also below.

Paramount has also set Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction (1987) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 9/13. The film stars Glenn Close and Michael Douglas. We’re awaiting official AV details and extras from the studio.

Coming on 9/13 from Paramount as well is a 4K Steelbook release of The Addams Family.

And Paramount and Comedy Central have set South Park: The Complete Twenty-Fourth Season for Blu-ray release on 8/16. [Read on here...]

We’ve got a pair of new disc reviews for you to enjoy this afternon, starting with Stephen’s look at Makoto Shinkai’s The Place Promised n Our Early Days (2004) on Blu-ray from GKids via Shout! Factory

Also, Dennis has delivered his thoughts on Sony’s standard Blu-ray release of Jon Watts’ recent Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Speaking of which, I wanted to take a moment to address the lack of reviews from yours truly in recent weeks. The reason is two-fold. First, I’ve been very focused on the upgrade to the Bits website, which has been long overdue and much needed. Before we kick off the day’s release news here at the site today, be sure to check out Stephen’s latest Blu-ray review, which features the Miklos Jancso Collection on from Kino Classics. It includes 7 films made by Jancso from 1966 to 1974.

Now then, Paramount has officially set Tarik Saleh’s The Contractor for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 6/7. The Digital version is widely available now. The film stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster. AV specs on the 4K are TBA.

Universal has made Michael Bay’s Ambulance official for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 6/14, with the Digital release expected next week on 5/23. Both the Blu-ray and 4K will feature Dolby Atmos audio. The latter will include Dolby Vision HDR as well. And look for extras to include 6 behind-the-scenes featurettes (Bayhem, Aerial Assault, Chase Capitol of the World, Pedal to the Metal, Finding Ambulance, and A Tribute to First Responders). Tim has turned in his thoughts on Cheh Chang’s Disciples of Shaolin (1975), a Shaw Brothers title on Blu-ray from 88 Films.

And Stephen has taken a look at Buzz Kulik’s The Hunter (1980) on Blu-ray from Imprint Films, which also happens to be the final film of actor Steve McQueen.

Both are worth a look, and as always there are more new disc reviews on the way all this week so be sure to watch for them.

In terms of announcement news today, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just made George Stevens, Sr.’s Giant (1956) official for 4K Ultra HD release on 6/21. The epic western stars Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and of course James Dean in his final role. [Read on here...]

Also, Dennis has checked out Danton Trumbo’s Johnny’s Got His Gun (1971) on Blu-ray from Imprint Films.

And Stephen has reviewed Erie C. Kenton’s You’re Telling Me! (1934) from Kino Lorber Studio Classics and Miklos Jancso’s Round-Up (1966) and The Red and the White (1967) from Kino Lorber, both on Blu-ray.

Extras will include audio commentary by Roland Emmerich, Dean Devlin, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Dolph Lundgren, a second commentary with just Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, 2 featurettes (A Tale of Two Titans and Guns, Genes, and Fighting Machines), an alternate ending, a vintage Behind-the-Scenes piece, and the theatrical trailer.
