All right, we’ve got three new disc reviews for you to finish out the week, plus some more great new title announcements. The reviews first...

Stephen has taken a look at David Twohy’s The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) in 4K Ultra HD, as released by our friends at Arrow Video.

Tim has reviewed the Warner Archive Collection’s new Hanna-Barbera Double Feature of Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998) and Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island (2019) on Blu-ray.

And Stuart has turned in his thoughts on Francis Ford Coppola’s You’re a Big Boy Now (1996) on Blu-ray, also from the Warner Archive Collection. And how fitting it is that we’re reviewing Coppola’s first feature film, even as what may be his last—Megalopolis (2024)—is now in theaters.

Now then... the big news today is all on the classic TV front: First, Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS have officially set I Love Lucy: The Complete Series for release on Blu-ray for the first time ever! Expected on 11/5, the 33-disc set will include all 180 episodes of I Love Lucy (1951-57), plus all episodes of The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour (1957-60) remastered with long-missing footage restored, plus the newly-colorized episode Lucy and the Loving Cup. In addition, the series’ opening and closing credits have been restored along with many original cast commercials. Three long-lost “flashback” scenes have been remastered. And a portion of the 1959 CBS Fall Preview Special has been included. You’ll also get the original I Love Lucy pilot episode (remastered from original 35mm kinescope), I Love Lucy: The Movie, audio commentaries on select episodes, Lucy on the Radio broadcasts, flubs, slideshows, cast bios, photo galleries, and production notes. We start today with two new disc reviews...

Tim has taken a look at Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs (2024) in 4K Ultra HD from Neon and Decal Releasing.

And Stephen has offered his thoughts on Michael Lehmann’s Heathers (1988) as released in 4K UHD in the UK only by the good people of Arrow Video.

Now then, the big news today is that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has finally set Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters (2024) for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 10/22, with the Digital release expected next week on 10/8. The 4K disc will include HDR10 only with Dolby Atmos sound. A 4K Steelbook version will also be available. Extras on all SKUs will include audio commentary with the director, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and 6 featurettes (Tracking the Fronts: The Path of Twisters, Into the Eye of the Storm, Glen Powell: All Access, Front Seat to a Chase, Voice of a Villain, and Tricked-Out Trucks). All right, welcome to a new week Bits readers!

Today is all about James Cameron here at the website, and to that end I’ve just finished knocking out in-depth reviews of the filmmaker’s The Abyss (1989), Aliens (1986), and True Lies (1994) in long-awaited physical 4K Ultra HD and remastered Blu-ray from 20th Century Studios!

The gist is that all three of these discs are worth picking up for Cameron fans and cinephiles, though one of the three titles is a bit complicated. The Abyss is the best looking of the three, nearly on par with the recent Titanic 4K release. Aliens is not far behind in terms of A/V quality and both titles include a nearly complete archive of all past special features created for the films.

True Lies is... well, it looks a lot better than the previous DVD, LaserDisc, and D-VHS releases. Sometimes, it looks fantastic. But at other times, the remastering is a little bit heavy-handed.

It’s still way better looking than StudioCanal’s Terminator 2 4K release though, so it’s a very solid upgrade over previous physical media releases, and it includes some nice features too.

Anyway, you’ll find all of the details in the linked reviews.

But while we’re on the topic of Cameron—and speaking the Terminatorproducer Gale Anne Hurd shared over the weekend that plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Cameron’s original The Terminator (1984) are soon to be revealed. Stuart’s take on Douglas Sirk’s Has Anybody Seen My Gal (1952) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Dennis’ look at Harry Beaumont’s Faithless (1932) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection, as well as Giuseppe Fiorello’s Fireworks (2023) on DVD from Cinephobia Releasing.

And Stephen’s review of Ishirō Honda’s Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965) in 4K Ultra HD from Toho Studios in Japan (note that this release has no English subtitles).

In announcement news today, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has just officially set Fred Zinnemann’s High Noon (1942) for release on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on 4/16. The film will include a collection of legacy special features (from previous Blu-ray and DVD releases) along with a pair of new audio commentary track by film historians, one by Alan K. Stuart’s take on the Film Focus: George Peppard box set from Imprint, which includes John Guillermin’s P.J. (1968), George Schaefer’s Pendulum (1969), Sam Wanamaker’s The Executioner (1970), and Richard T. Heffron’s Newman’s Law (1974).

Dennis’ look at Val Guest’s Assignment K (1968), also new on Blu-ray from Imprint.

And finally, Stephen’s thoughts on Vincente Minnelli and Busby Berkeley’s Cabin in the Sky (1943) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

We’ve got two new disc reviews for you to enjoy this afternoon, both of them Blu-ray titles…

First, Stephen has taken a look at John Dahl’s Red Rock West (1993) on Blu-ray, which is one of the first titles in Vinegar Syndrome’s new Cinématographe line, curated by our friend (and producer) Justin LaLiberty.

And I’ve reviewed Umbrella Entertainment’s recent Frank Herbert’s Dune Complete Collection Blu-ray box set, which includes John Harrison’s Dune (2000) miniseries along with Greg Yaitanes’ Children of Dune (2003) miniseries, as well as a ton of great special features and swag, all in super-deluxe packaging.

More reviews are forthcoming, including—in the next day or two—my take on Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023) from Lionsgate and Ronald F. Maxwell’s Little Darlings (1980), both of them in 4K Ultra HD. Little Darlings, I should note, is the other debut title in Vinegar Syndrome’s new Cinématographe line. So watch for those very soon.

We’re rounding out the week here at The Bits with a little bit more announcement news today, but first a couple more reviews...

Tim offered his thoughts on Travis Knight’s Kubo and the Two Strings in 4K Ultra HD from Laika via Shout! Factory—both the regular Amaray version as well as the Steelbook packaging.

Pressing on to this afternoon’s release news, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has just revealed that they’re bringing Charles Laughton’s classic noir thriller The Night of the Hunter (1955) to 4K Ultra HD on 5/30, complete with a new scan and Dolby Vision HDR grade.

Also newly revealed as coming to Blu-ray from KLSC are Dave Thomas’ The Experts (1989) on 5/9 and Robert Aldrich’s Hustle (1975) on 5/16.

In addition, they’re working on “coming soon” Blu-ray releases of René Clément’s The Day and the Hour (1963)—this one mastered from a new 4K restoration by Gaumont—as well as Stephen Norrington’s Death Machine (1994). [Read on here...]

We’ve got another new disc review for you today, actually two of them in a way: Our own Tim Salmons has taken a look at Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi’s The BoxTrolls in 4K Ultra HD from Laika via Shout! Factory—both the regular Amaray version as well as the Steelbook packaging.

In announcement news today, our friend George Feltenstein has just revealed (via Tim Millard’s excellent The Extras podcast) the Warner Archive Collection’s planned April slate of Blu-ray titles, which will officially include Safe in Hell (1931) mastered from a 4K scan and restoration of a rare and newly-discovered 35 mm print, along with One Way Passage (1932), The Strawberry Blonde (1941), and Storm Warning (1951) each mastered from new 4K scans of the original camera negatives, and A Lion in the Streets (1953) mastered from a new 4K restoration of the original three-strip Technicolor camera negatives. All of these titles are due to street toward the end of the month (dates TBA).

The Warner Archive has apparently been working with The Film Foundation on these titles. Also revealed to be coming at some point this year to Blu-ray is The Roaring Twenties (1939). Again, street date is TBA. [Read on here...]

We start things off today with a new review from Stephen Bjork, who checks out Jack Bomay and Sal Watts’ Solomon King (1974) on Blu-ray from Deaf Crocodile via Vinegar Syndrome.

And not to be outdone, Stuart has offered his thoughts on Marco Tullio Giordana’s One Hundred Steps (2000) on Blu-ray from Raro Video.

Now then, the big release news today is that HBO and Warner Bros have officially announced the physical Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release of The Last of Us: The Complete First Season on 7/18 (SRP $44.98, $39.99, and $49.99 respectively), with the Digital version expected to drop on 4/11!

The package will include all 9 episodes, along with three hours worth of extras. Among them are 4 Getting to Know Me featurettes, 2 The Last Debrief with Troy Baker featurettes, 2 Is This a The Last of Us Line? featurettes, 9 Inside the Episode featurettes, and a pair of featurettes that are exclusive to the disc SKUs including The Last of Us: Stranger Than Fiction and Controllers Down: Adapting The Last of Us.
