Burnt Offerings: MOD DVD

We’ve got a few things for you today here at The Bits, so let’s get right to it...

First up, we’ve posted a trio of new disc reviews, including Tim’s thoughts on Arrow’s The Slayer and Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man: Limited Edition Collection on Blu-ray, and also Jim Hemphill’s take on CBS’s NCIS: The Complete Fourteenth Season on DVD. Enjoy and know that more reviews are on the way, including more 4K!

Also here at The Bits today, we’ve just posted the weekly Release Dates and Artwork update, featuring all the latest Blu-ray, 3D, DVD & 4K Ultra HD cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, whenever you order literally anything from Amazon (in the same session) after clicking through to them from our links, you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we appreciate it very much. Open Along Edge: Netflix’s DVD Problem

In the fall of 2015, Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation debuted at the Venice International Film Festival where it was acquired for distribution by Netflix for a whopping $12 million. The film went on to rack up an impressive list of awards and nominations, many singling out Idris Elba’s powerful supporting performance as the Commandant of a battalion of child soldiers. It appeared on several critics’ year-end top ten lists, including, among others, Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune, Drew McWeeny (then at HitFix), and Erin Whitney of ScreenCrush. It is “certified fresh” by review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes with an enviable 91% standing on Ye Olde TomatoMeter. It also made less than a million dollars at the box office, received zero Academy Award nominations, and, as of spring 2017, is not available on Blu-ray or DVD. You probably haven’t thought of it at all in at least a year. [Read on here...]

All right, there’s not much release news today, but our own Tim Salmons has delivered his penultimate Blu-ray review of Halloween Hangover, and it’s a look at Arrow Video’s Region B release of The ’Burbs! Do check that out. He’s got another review coming tomorrow for Halloween itself, and he’ll have a few more leftovers for you next week. So be sure to check back for it.  [Read on here…]

This is just a quick update to let you all know about something interesting that many of you guys are going to want to check out. You remember that HD remastering of The X-Files we told you was happening over two years ago now? There’s still no word of a proper Blu-ray release of the series yet, though we certainly know many of you want one. BUT… Netflix has just begun to stream the series in HD. So at the very least, many of you can finally see it and get a better sense of the HD quality and what the early episodes look like in widescreen. Do give it a look.

After you do, ask yourself this question: Are you guys still interested in The X-Files on Blu-ray? What do you think of the HD quality of the series? Sound off on our Facebook page (click this link). We’d love to know what you think… and we know the studios monitor your comments there too. So make yourself heard!

Back Monday with the usual. Have a great weekend and stay tuned!

Burnt Offerings for October 29, 2014

Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed an alarming increase in the number of MOD titles that are simply re-releases of out-of-print discs and a decrease in the number of never-before-released movies. We’re probably going to be seeing a lot more of that, unfortunately. But at least this week, there are a few brand new Most Wanted picks making their overdue DVD debuts. Let’s take a gander at them and at a special all-scary-movie edition of Wide Awake In Streamland for your Halloween viewing pleasure. [Read on here...]

Burnt Offerings for October 7, 2014

Here’s a surprise. The long dormant MGM Limited Edition Collection has announced that they’ll soon be manufacturing on demand again. Their initial line-up is scheduled to arrive next week and I’ll be taking a look at those titles then. Before you get too excited, almost all of the titles in this first wave are previously released out-of-print movies. At least it’s something, though, and hopefully we’ll start seeing some more obscurities making their disc debuts from MGM soon.

In the meantime, here’s your weekly rundown of the week’s new MOD discs and a selection of streaming titles worthy of your attention. As always, please consider making a purchase via one of these nifty banners and you’ll help support The Bits. Many thanks if you do.  [Read on here...]

We’re kicking off things today here at The Bits with Todd’s weekly Doogan’s Queue column, in which he highlights the best of all the new Blu-ray and DVD releases available in stores today. Don’t miss it.

Adam has also turned in this week’s Burnt Offerings: MOD DVD column, running down the latest in small batch DVD and Blu-ray titles from the various studio classics archives, as well as what’s new in streaming on Warner Archive Instant, Netflix, Hulu, etc. Don’t miss it.

Also, our own Russell Hammond has posted the weekly update of the Release Dates & Artwork section featuring all the latest Blu-ray and DVD cover artwork, each with its own Amazon pre-order link. Don’t forget – anytime you order anything at all from Amazon after clicking through to our links, you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we really appreciate it.  [Read on here…]

Burnt Offerings for September 30, 2014

This is going to be a quick one this week, thanks primarily to the studios for their usual end-of-month slowdown. But we’ll still take a look at the few new MOD releases and offer a glance at any interesting islands in the streams. I apologize for that last joke, it was beneath us both. As always, click on the banners below if you see anything that strikes your fancy and you’ll be helping to support our work here and earning a hearty handclasp from Bill Hunt next time you run into him. Burnt Offerings for September 23, 2014

If it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium. Belgium, of course, being code for our weekly look at new MOD DVD releases and interesting titles currently available on various streaming services. You see, it’s wordy. You can understand why we shortened it to “Belgium”. Anyhoo, clicking on the banners below whisks you away to a glorious world of e-commerce. Shop and support and we thank you most sincerely. [Read on here...]

Burnt Offerings for September 16, 2014

We’re going to be trying something a little bit different here at Burnt Offerings starting this week. Don’t worry, we’ll still take a close look at this week’s roundup of MOD releases (and considering the large number of westerns this week, “roundup” is the right word). But afterwards, we’re going to take a quick look at what’s available instantly, at your fingertips, right now on the intertubes in a mini-column-within-a-column I’m calling Wide Awake In Streamland. We’ll get to that in a minute but first, the discs (available for purchase via the banners below, thank you very much indeed).  [Read on here…]
