Morning, folks! We’ve got an early Bits news post here today with some big catalog announcement news for 4K Ultra HD fans. But first, we’ve got more new Blu-ray Disc reviews for you…

Tim has posted his thoughts on David Nelson’s Death Screams (1982) from Arrow Video, along with John D. Lamond’s Nightmares (1980) from Umbrella Entertainment.

Meanwhile, Dennis has turned in a look at Kurt Neumann’s The Secret of the Blue Room (1933) from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, as well as M. Night Shyamalan’s Old from Universal.

And Stephen has checked in as well with comments on the Warner Archive Collection’s new Val Lewton Double Feature of The Ghost Ship (1943) and Bedlam (1946), as well as their recent Tex Avery Screwball Classics: Volume 3.

Let’s have a quick round-up of Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release news, and then I must dive back into my own review work over the next several days...

First up, it does indeed appear that Disney is preparing a 4K Ultra HD release of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. I’ve now got multiple retail and industry sources confirming this. However, don’t expect the sequels to be announced anytime soon. It’s possible that the studio is planning to release more films in the series next year if this first one sells well (and possibly promoted by the success of the films in streaming on Disney+) but for now Curse of the Black Pearl seems to be the only film immediately in the offing.

Also, while we’re on the topic of Disney, it seems that the Heat 4K release continues to be in limbo, but is still expected to arrive on the format sometime next year.

Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is definitely shaping up for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD in early January sometime. Info some retailers suggests that the studio is targeting 1/11/22 as the street date. And for those of you who have been waiting, not only does it finally arrive in theaters tomorrow (with sneak peek preview screenings tonight in many US cities), the film premieres IN JUST TWO HOURS in 4K with HDR and Dolby Atmos on HBO Max. So get ready to enjoy a helluva good cinematic experience. [Read on here...]

We’ve got a couple things for you today, including some new 4K Ultra HD release news. But first, we have several more new reviews for you to check out...

Dennis has turned in his thoughts on Roger Corman’s The Tomb of Ligeia (1964) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics and also Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman on Blu-ray from Universal.

Stephen has checked in with a look at Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover and Bruce Beresford’s Breaker Morant, both recently-released on Blu-ray by Umbrella Entertainment, as well as Jon Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation in 4K Ultra HD from Paramount.

And Tim has offered his take on Anthony Hickox’s Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989) on Blu-ray from the Vestron Video Collector’s Series, along with Shout! Factory’s new Steelbook 4K Ultra HD release of the animated The Transformers: The Movie.

And for those of you who may be wondering what I’m up to review-wise, I’m currently working on film reviews for the first four Star Trek features, as well as David Lynch’s Dune, and Ridley Scott’s Legend, in anticipation of receiving the newly-remastered 4K (and/or Blu-ray) editions of each from Paramount and Arrow Video respectively in the next week or two. All right, we’re starting today with a couple of new disc reviews...

First of all, Stephen has checked out Michael Mann’s Collateral on 4K Ultra HD, as released late last year on the format by Paramount Home Entertainment. It’s a modest upgrade, but might be worth a look for fans.

Also, Dennis has turned in his thoughts on D.A. Pennebaker’s 1970 documentary film Original Cast Album: Company, as newly released on Blu-ray by the Criterion Collection. Do check it out.

Now then, the big release news today is that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and 20th Century Studios have just officially set Shawn Levy’s Free Guy for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 10/12, with the Digital release expected on 9/28. The 4K disc will include HDR10 high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos audio. [Read on here...]

We’re very pleased this morning to bring you some great breaking release news...

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has just officially set director Robert Zemeckis’ ground-breaking animation/live action comedy Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 12/7! You can see the cover artwork at left and also below.

We first reported that this title was coming over a year ago here at The Digital Bits, with studio sources originally providing us with a street date of 10/12. More recently those same sources had suggested to us that the title could slip into early 2022. (The other 4K title we were told to expect along with it—Michael Mann’s Heat (1995)—is likely to be so delayed.) So it’s great to see that work on the Roger Rabbit 4K release has finally been completed in time for a release this year. [Read on here...]

All right, it’s been a busy last several days here at The Bits. For one thing, just personally, I had my mother visiting from North Dakota all last week for the first time in over two years given the pandemic. And that was great, but of course it set me back on 4K review work (which I intend to catch up on this week).

I’ve also just spent most of today on the phone with industry sources, gathering information for our big preview of 4K Ultra HD catalog releases that are coming in the second half of 2021. And that’s the crux of today’s post here at The Bits, but more on that in a minute.

First, we have a couple more new disc reviews to share with you...

Dennis has posted his thoughts on Andrew V. McLaglen’s 1965 Civil War drama Shenandoah, which stars Jimmy Stewart. The film arrives on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics on 7/27.

And Stephen has offered a look at John Sturges’ acclaimed 1959 western Last Train from Gun Hill, a VistaVision classic newly released on Blu-ray as part of the Paramount Presents line-up. [Read on here...]

Just a quick post today, but we do have a bit of interesting release news to report.

First, we know that lots of you have been eagerly awaiting details on the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Many international retail sites have—for weeks now—had it up for pre-order, set to street on or about 5/26. Indeed, we’ve had it on our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits for a few months now, anticipating a 5/25 US street date. Just today, the Australian retailer JB Hi-Fi put the title up for pre-order with the 5/26 date. (Thanks to Bits reader Tim P. for the heads-up on that one.) So, as we noted here last week, we’re pretty confident that—barring some sort of manufacturing or shipping delay—Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will be announcing it any time now for a 5/25 release in the States on both formats. It’s possible it will be released under the Warner Archive label, like Snyder’s recently 4K-remastered Batman v Superman, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Now then, these aren’t actual announcements, but we’re learned that Paramount has just made a new 4K remaster (with HDR) of Saturday Night Fever available on Kaleidescape and iTunes, so it’s possible that there could be a physical 4K release in the offing. However, the company has also recently made 48 Hours and Another 48 Hours available in Digital 4K, with only remastered Blu-rays currently set for physical release, so we’ll have to wait and see. Today’s big news is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has finally officially set Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 3/30. The Digital release is expected on 3/16, with PVOD rental set for this week on 2/12.

The 4K Ultra HD release will include Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ high dynamic range, with Dolby Atmos audio. Extras will include 8 featurettes (The Making of Wonder Woman 1984: Expanding the Wonder, Gal & Kristen: Friends Forever, Small But Mighty, Scene Study: The Open Road, Scene Study: The Mall, Gal & Krissy Having Fun, and Meet the Amazons), the Black Gold Infomercial, a Gag Reel, and a Wonder Woman 1984 Retro Remix feature.

We’re rounding out the week with another new disc review and some great breaking Blu-ray and 4K release news as well.

First up the disc review: I’ve just posted my thoughts on Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ new Blu-ray release of the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979) feature film, which streets on November 24th. It’s a nice HD presentation and the first time the film has appeared on the format in its 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio. Do give it a look.

Also, we may check back in later today with a review of Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 in 4K Ultra HD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. It’s definitely in progress, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
