Meanwhile, on the 4K front, Paramount is expected to release George Cukor’s My Fair Lady (1964) on 5/4, with J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 due to follow on 5/25. Note that those dates should be considered tentative until the studio officially announces.
There have also been reports circulating around the Internet over the last couple days (including here at the excellent Bluray-Disc.de site) that Disney’s anticipated release of Michael Mann’s Heat (1995) and Jan de Bont’s Speed (1994) in 4K has been delayed. You may recall that we mentioned them here on The Bits about a week ago (see this link). The listings have disappeared from the German retailer that originally posted then, with reports suggesting that the studio asked the retailer to remove them. Here’s what likely happened: The retailer listed them (thus leaking word that the titles were indeed coming) well before Disney was ready to talk about them. In our long experience, the Hollywood studios haven’t historically liked this much. Presumably, the studio wants to control the announcement themselves. So the moment the news broke, the studio began getting questions about it and they took steps to get control of the situation by pushing pause on it. But our sources do indicate that the titles are still coming this year. So be patient and we expect the situation to resolve itself in the coming weeks.
One other 4K note today: Readers have been asking us when Zack Snyder’s Justice League is expected to be released on 4K. Early indications from retailers had suggested a March release, timed to coincide with the extended film’s 3/18 debut on HBO Max. But those indications have pulled back a bit of late. Our guess is that AT&T and Warner would prefer a period of exclusivity on HBO Max before releasing the film on disc. For comparison, Wonder Woman 1984 was available on HBO Max in December, and now the disc release is officially set for 3/30. If a similar pattern is followed for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, you could reasonably expect the disc release to follow in May or June. So again, be patient and we expect further news in the coming weeks.
Finally today, we’ve got two additional things for you. First, our old friend and special edition producer Cliff Stephenson appeared on Robert Meyer Burnett’s Let’s Get Physical Media webcast last month and somehow we overlooked it. As many of you know, Rob’s an old friend too—and a former special edition producer himself—so we can say with confidence that their discussion about physical media should be well worth your time. You’ll find it here...
If you do check it out, give them some likes and follows and tell them The Bits sent you.
And finally this afternoon, my wife Sarah recently turned me on to one of the coolest websites I’ve seen in a long time: Radio Garden. You can use it listen to almost any radio station on Earth by selecting its location on a rotating globe. The site was created by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and it’s incredibly cool. It gives you a window into the local music experience of almost any corner of the globe. So do try it out here and I think you’ll have fun with it.
All right, we’ll leave you today with a look at the cover artwork for both versions of Wonder Woman 1984 and also the Harley Quinn animated series on Blu-ray (click to pre-order them on Amazon)...
That’s all for now. Stay tuned...!
