It’s a little bit of a slow news day today, but we do have a couple items of interest for you...

First though, I had the chance to see an impressive new IMAX film last night. Directed by Stephen van Vuuren and narrated by LeVar Burton of Star Trek fame, In Saturn’s Rings is a large-format look at NASA’s Cassini mission to Saturn, made using over 7.5 million real high-resolution images of the planet, its moons, and other astronomical objects, carefully assembled and presented using classical multi-plane animation techniques. The film is aptly named; some of these images are truly breathtaking, putting you right in the middle of the Saturn system. If you’re a space enthusiast or simply love a good IMAX documentary, the film is well worth a look.

It’s now playing at a handful of theaters around the country, with many more screenings to come. And I can tell you, it would make a pretty fine Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release at some point too. First things first today... some of you may have seen my reviews of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart and Ridley Scott’s Gladiator on 4K Ultra HD when I posted them late on Friday night, but if not... there you go. Both are coming out on 5/15 from Paramount in reference quality (or very close to it) and they’re certainly the best way to see these films yet bar none.

Also today, Tim has just posted reviews of Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ outstanding new The Outer Limits: Season One box set, along with Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty: Season 1 and Season 2, all on Blu-ray. Each of these titles are well worth a look.

In 4K Ultra HD catalog news, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just set The Quick and the Dead for release on the format on 7/17. The 4K disc will feature Dolby Atmos audio and HDR10. It will also include the previous Blu-ray extras and will add 7 never-before-seen deleted scenes for this release. We’ve updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly. All right, we’ve got a trio of new reviews for you today, plus some big release news...

First, I’ve given Duncan Jones’ Source Code a look on 4K Ultra HD from Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment, featuring Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision HDR. I’ve also reviewed Scott Cooper’s western Hostiles on 4K Ultra HD, also from Lionsgate. Both are well worth your time.

And Tim Salmons has given Shout! Factory’s new Mystery Science Theater 3000: Season 11 a spin on Blu-ray Disc, featuring 14 new episodes (Reptilicus, Cry Wilderness, The Time Travelers, Avalanche, The Beast of Hollow Mountain, Starcrash, The Land That Time Forgot, The Loves of Hercules, Yongary: Monster from the Deep, Wizards of the Lost Kingdom, Wizards of the Lost Kingdom II, Carnival Magic, The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t, and At the Earth’s Core). All right, we’ve got some interesting release news to report today. First though…

We’ve posted several new Blu-ray reviews in the last couple of days, including my take on Warner Archive’s Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero and the Kino Lorber Studio Classics title Joan of Arc, as well as Tim’s thoughts on Warner Archive’s Joe Versus the Volcano, Arrow Video’s There’s Always Vanilla, Shout!/Scream Factory’s Colossus: The Forbin Project and 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene, and Universal’s Happy Death Day. Now then, Shout! Factory has announced that they’re going to be bringing Disney’s Gravity Falls: The Complete Series to Blu-ray and DVD on 7/24 (SRP $99.99 and $59.97 respectively, though if you purchase them from Shout! directly you get $20 off the BD and $10 off the DVD). [Read on here...]

All right, first up today we have two more Blu-ray reviews from Tim for you, including his thoughts on Warner Archive’s Doc Hollywood and also Dragonwyck from Twilight Time. Both are worth a look. And a little later today I’ll be back with my review of Sony’s The Dark Crystal on 4K Ultra HD (I’ll add the link here when it’s up).

Now then, the BIG news this afternoon (weren’t we just talking about this yesterday?) is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has now officially announced the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the Wachowskis’ 1999 sci-fi/cyberpunk classic The Matrix on 5/22 (SRP $41.99). The 4K release has been produced from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative, a remaster supervised by the film’s director of photography, Bill Pope. The resulting image has been given HDR color grades in both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, both of which will be featured on this 4K UHD release. Furthermore, the 4K release will feature Dolby Atmos object-based audio. The actual 4K disc will also include a written introduction by the Wachowskis, along with all four previously-available audio commentaries (including the Philosopher, Critics, Cast & Crew, and Composer tracks). We’re starting the new week with a trio of Blu-ray reviews from Tim, all three Shout!/Scream Factory titles, including The ’Burbs: Collector’s Edition, The Strangers: Collector’s Edition, and Night of the Seagulls. More are coming tomorrow, so stay tuned.

Now then, we’ve got some interesting news today for you as well...

First up, it appears that Warner’s The Matrix and Fox’s Die Hard, which we’ve mentioned here at The Bits recently are both coming to 4K Ultra HD (see here and here), will street in 4K sometime in May. Neither title is as yet officially announced, but multiple industry sources now are pointing to likely May street dates. And we now have European retail temp cover artwork for The Matrix too, which you can see at left. [Read on here...]

We’re wrapping up the week with no less than four new disc reviews today, including Tim’s thoughts on The In-Laws from Criterion, the Viva L’Italia: Special Edition from Arrow Academy, and the Basket Case: Limited Edition from Arrow Video, all on Blu-ray.

The big news today is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has set 12 Strong for release on Blu-ray Combo and DVD on 5/1, with the Digital release expected on 4/10. Extras on the Blu-ray will include a pair of featurettes (12 Strong: The Making of an Impossible Mission and Monumental Effort: Building America’s Response Monument). It does not appear that a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release is forthcoming, though the studio notes that the film will be available digitally in 4K on 4/10.

Also good news: Universal Studios Home Entertainment and GKids are releasing the anime Mary and the Witch’s Flower on Blu-ray and DVD on 5/1. The film was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arrietty and When Marnie Was There), formerly of Studio Ghibli. Extras will include the Film Completion Press Conference, a Theatrical Promotional Movie, an interview with the filmmakers, the NTV special Creating Mary and the Witches Flower, and A Special Conversation... Sekai No Owari: Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Yoshaiki Nishimura. [Read on here...]

The big news today is that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has just set Martin McDonagh’s Best Picture-nominated film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/27. The Digital release is expected on 2/13. Extras on the Blu-rays will include the Six Shooter short film and the Crucify ‘Em: The Making of Three Billboards featurette. Audio will be DTS-HD MA on both Blu-ray versions.

Also, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has set Molly’s Game, staring Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, and Kevin Costner, for Blu-ray and DVD release on 4/10. [Read on here…]

Tim has taken a deep dive into Severin Films’ The Amicus Collection box set, which includes Asylum, And Now the Screaming Starts, and The Beast Must Die! on Blu-ray, each with significant extras. The box streeted on 1/16 and if you’re a fan of these films it’s well worth a look. So enjoy Tim’s review!

The big news today is that Scream Factory has just announced the It’s Alive Trilogy for release as a Blu-ray box set on 5/15. A potentially great title aside, the most interesting aspect of this is that these are Warner Bros titles, so it seems possible that this could be just the first of several titles coming to BD from Shout!/Scream and Warner in 2018.
