Bud on Burt, plus New on Blu-ray
[What follows is a feature I wrote for The Daily Oklahoman about one of the greatest movie stars and human beings ever… Burt Reynolds]
Maybe it was the mustache. Or the unscripted quips. Or the genteel Southern manner.
Or just maybe it was that laugh, a cackle delivered by one comfortable in his own skin – inviting his audience gut bust with him, as though they were all in a private joke.
That’s our Burt. And he’s, unbelievably, gone.
Fame, according to Jeanine Bissinger, is “often conferred or withheld just as is love, for reasons and on grounds other than merits.” Burt Reynolds earned his fame with raw boned talent and insight into the business of filmed diversion. [Read on here...]

First up today, in honor of Global Bond Day, our own Michael Coate has posted a new History, Legacy & Showmanship retrospective, looking back at Sean Connery’s last turn as 007 in Never Say Never Again. The piece features another great roundtable discussion with film historians, so enjoy!

More reviews are on the way, so be sure to watch for them.
In news today, we have more word from retailers that Disney is going to be bringing The Lion King to 4K UHD by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Wreck-It Ralph has now appeared for 4K UHD pre-order on Best Buy with a street date of 11/6, the same day as The Incredibles 2. [Read on here...]

Celebrating Mickey, remembering Battlestar on its 40th, new announcements, Andre Blay RIP & digital streaming follow-up
Before we get to the news, we begin the week with four new Blu-ray reviews, including…
Tim Salmons’ look at Terry Gilliam’s Tideland (2005) from Arrow Video.
David Steigman’s take on The French Way (1945) from MVD.
And Dennis Seuling’s look at Bram Stoker’s Shadowbuilder (1998) from the MVD Rewind Collection and That Summer (2017) on DVD from IFC Independent Film. Fans of the 1975 Albert and David Maysles documentary Grey Gardens will find That Summer of interest, as it contains raw footage from an earlier project starring the two Edies.
Also, we’ve posted the latest update of the Release Dates & Artwork section featuring new Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. Solo: A Star Wars Story 4K review, plus Zatoichi, Ash v Evil Dead: Complete, Man in the Iron Mask, Panic Room 4K update & more
All right, first up today, we have more new disc reviews for you...
I’ve just posted my in-depth look at Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story in 4K Ultra HD from Disney and Lucasfilm. The three-disc set has nearly two hours of extras on the bonus Blu-ray and they’re pretty great. The title looks and sounds very nice in 4K Ultra HD as well. You can find the review here.
Meanwhile, I’ve also reviewed Shintao Katsu’s Zatoichi (1989), aka Zatoichi: Darkness Is His Ally, now available on Blu-ray at long last from Media Blasters and Tokyo Shock. If you’re a Zatoichi fan, it’s a perfect match to the amazing Criterion Blu-ray box set and completes the long-running Japanese film saga on Blu-ray.
Also, Dennis Seuling has checked in with his thoughts on Focus Films and Universal’s Won’t You Be My Neighbor? documentary about Fred Rogers on Blu-ray.
We have more new Blu-ray and 4K reviews on the way, so be sure to watch for them. [Read on here...]

DreamWorks’ Prince of Egypt & Antz finally going Blu, plus Superman 4K & Dances with Wolves
All right, we’re working to smooth out some server issues here at The Bits, so today’s post will be brief. But we do have a couple of quick things to report for you today...
First, we’ve gotten a ton of requests over the years from readers wondering when DreamWorks’ Prince of Egypt and Antz were going to be released on Blu-ray. And the answer, finally, is October 16.
You can pre-order them here and here on Amazon and you can see the cover artwork for Prince of Egypt on the left there (and also below).
Each will feature 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and it appears that the previous DVD extras will carry over. Thanks to Bits reader Chris C. for the heads-up on this. [Read on here...]
