Finally today, we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of the great author and film historian (and longtime friend of The Bits) David J. Skal. We are all very saddened here to learn that he was killed in a car accident in Los Angeles on January 1. His expertise on horror cinema in particular was legendary.
Skal wrote many books on the subject, including Hollywood Gothic: The Tangled Web of Dracula from Stage to Screen (1990). And as disc fans will know, his DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD audio commentaries are many and wonderful, including such titles as Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), Freaks (1932), The Mummy (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), The Wolf Man (1941), Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), and more.
Be sure to check out David’s entry in the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction here. Thank you, David, for sharing your love of cinema and your friendship. You will be missed.
We’ll leave you with a look at the cover artwork for some of the titles mentioned below, with Amazon pre-order links if available...
