All right, we’ve got just a quick news update for you today, as we’ve got family visiting here this week.

A couple of notes though: I will be reviewing Disney’s Lion King and Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout on 4K Ultra HD. Both releases are worth your time. The latter film is absolutely terrific, and the 4K release does preserve the shifting aspect ratio for scenes filmed in IMAX (which look great).

And though Disney didn’t send out Lion King for review, I did pick up a copy and have given it a cursory look. The HDR grade is restrained, but the wide color gamut makes a big difference for this film, even though it’s traditional hand-drawn animation. And I do believe that a bit more detail is visible in the image (especially in the backgroud artwork) than the Blu-ray. I’ll try to have both reviewed by this time next week, but don’t hesitate to pick up either if you’re interested. [Read on here...]

Note that we also have a couple of new History, Legacy & Showmanship columns coming from our own Michael Coate over the next couple weeks, so be sure to watch for those.

On the 4K front today, it appears that Universal is preparing a 4K Ultra HD release of Martin Scorsese’s Casino early next year according to retail sources.

We also have word from retail sources that Warner’s A Star Is Born remake is set for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 2/19/19. We’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has quietly released a 50 Years of Planet of the Apes: 9-Movie Collection box set this week that includes the 6 original films plus the Tim Burton film on Blu-ray, along with the recent trilogy on 4K Ultra HD.

The big news today is that Shout! Factory and Scream have been announcing a ton of great new Blu-ray titles that are coming in early 2019. Among them are Kalifornia (Shout Select) on 3/5/19, The Craft, Someone to Watch Over Me (Shout Select), and Man’s Best Friend on 3/12, The Witches (1966), Tarantula!, The Deadly Mantis, and Born in East L.A. (Shout Select) on 3/19, and Warning Sign, The Street Fighter Collection, and The Body Snatcher (1945) on 3/26.

Meanwhile, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has announced that they have Emmanuelle, Emmanuelle 2, and Goodbye Emmanuelle coming soon on Blu-ray and DVD.

And here’s some terrific news: Gunpowder & Sky is releasing the terrific indie sci-fi film Prospect on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/5/19.

More tomorrow. Stay tuned…
