Warner Bros. sets Tomb Raider (2018) for release on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 6/12
All right, the big news today is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has set Tomb Raider (2018) for release on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 6/12, with the Digital release expected on 5/29. The 4K disc will feature both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, and the film was finished as a 4K Digital Intermediate. Extras will include 4 featurettes (Tomb Raider: Uncovered, Croft Training, Breaking Down the Rapids, and Lara Croft: Evolution of an Icon). We’ve updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly. You can see the cover artwork to the left and also below. We’ll add the Blu-ray 3D cover artwork as soon as we have it.
By the way, we’ve also updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List with new information from retail and industry sources, which suggest that Avengers: Infinity War will be an August release. Also, Disney MAY be planning to release Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron on 4K with it. Paramount is releasing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on 7/17. Universal is working on Deer Hunter for July. Warner appears to be prepping The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions to follow the original film to 4K late this year. And finally, Sony may be prepping Panic Room for release on BD and 4K this year. As always, we caution you to consider all of this information Rumor Mill-worthy until the studios make official announcements.
One last 4K note: We expect to have our hands on Paramount’s Braveheart and Gladiator, along with Warner’s The Matrix, on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray by the end of the week or early next. Rest assured, we’ll get in-depth reviews up here at The Bits as soon as they come in. [Read on here...]

Warner officially sets a remastered Matrix for 4K on 5/22, plus Die Hard on 5/15 & The Incredibles in 4K too!
All right, first up today we have two more Blu-ray reviews from Tim for you, including his thoughts on Warner Archive’s Doc Hollywood and also Dragonwyck from Twilight Time. Both are worth a look. And a little later today I’ll be back with my review of Sony’s The Dark Crystal on 4K Ultra HD (I’ll add the link here when it’s up).
Now then, the BIG news this afternoon (weren’t we just talking about this yesterday?) is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has now officially announced the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the Wachowskis’ 1999 sci-fi/cyberpunk classic The Matrix on 5/22 (SRP $41.99). The 4K release has been produced from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative, a remaster supervised by the film’s director of photography, Bill Pope. The resulting image has been given HDR color grades in both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, both of which will be featured on this 4K UHD release. Furthermore, the 4K release will feature Dolby Atmos object-based audio. The actual 4K disc will also include a written introduction by the Wachowskis, along with all four previously-available audio commentaries (including the Philosopher, Critics, Cast & Crew, and Composer tracks). Ladybird, Batman vs Mr. Freeze: SubZero, Outlander: Season 3 & Panasonic’s new DP-UB9000 flagship 4K player
All right, we have another Blu-ray review for you today, and it’s a good one: Tim has checked out Criterion’s outstanding new Night of the Living Dead Blu-ray and he offers his thoughts on that in-depth today. You can find that here. And I’ll be checking in with another 4K Ultra HD review myself later today, so be sure to watch for it.
In announcement news today, Lionsgate has just set Greta Gerwig’s Best Picture-nominated film Ladybird for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/6. Extras will include audio commentary with Gerwig and cinematographer Sam Levy along with the Realizing Lady Bird featurette. You can see the cover artwork at left and it’s available for pre-order below.
Warner Archive just thrilled Batman fans with a Valentine’s Day tease that they’re working on a new Blu-ray edition of the animated Batman vs. Mr. Freeze: SubZero Blu-ray. We don’t have a street date yet, but it’ll be a very nice appetizer until Warner Archive releases they’re forthcoming Batman: The Animated Series Blu-ray set later this year. Our hats off to everyone at the Archive; they’re killing it with these releases. [Read on here…]
Talking Blu with The Digital Bits begins, plus Batman Ninja, I Tonya, Doctor Who: Tom Baker BDs & more
Tim has another couple of disc reviews for you today, starting with the Pulp: Special Edition on Blu-ray from Arrow Video and Beyond the Seventh Door on DVD from Severin Films and Intervision. Do give them a look.
In announcement news today, Universal has officially set Craig Gillespie’s twisted comedy I, Tonya for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/13, with the Digital release expected on 3/2. The film stars Margo Robbie and Allison Janney. It’s quite good.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release the anime Batman Ninja on Blu-ray and DVD on 5/8. The BD will include English dubbed audio as well as the original Japanese audio with English subtitles. Strangely, there are also plans to release it in 4K but digitally only this summer, not on 4K UHD Blu-ray. That seems like a mistake to me, but I suppose that if the Blu-ray sells well the studio could reconsider. Extras will include 3 featurettes (East/West Batman, Batman: Made in Japan, and New York Comic Con Presents Batman Ninja). The Blu-ray will also be available in regular and Steelbook versions. It’s Alive Trilogy from Scream, plus Pitch Perfect 1-3, Handmaid’s Tale: S1, Call Me By Your Name, Mute & more
We’ve got some more new release news for you today, but first another review...
Tim has taken a deep dive into Severin Films’ The Amicus Collection box set, which includes Asylum, And Now the Screaming Starts, and The Beast Must Die! on Blu-ray, each with significant extras. The box streeted on 1/16 and if you’re a fan of these films it’s well worth a look. So enjoy Tim’s review!
The big news today is that Scream Factory has just announced the It’s Alive Trilogy for release as a Blu-ray box set on 5/15. A potentially great title aside, the most interesting aspect of this is that these are Warner Bros titles, so it seems possible that this could be just the first of several titles coming to BD from Shout!/Scream and Warner in 2018. We look forward to hearing more. [Read on here…]

Warner Bros. is planning a 50th anniversary 4K release of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey
So today’s post is a quick one, but it’s a very, very good bit of news, especially for catalog and 4K fans…
Retail sources have begun telling us that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is preparing to release a 4K Ultra HD version of director Stanley Kubrick’s landmark science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. This is something we’ve actually known was coming for a few months now, having heard it off the record directly from studio sources. Now that we’re finally hearing the first word from retailers we feel comfortable confirming it. [Read on here…]
A release news update with Kino, Arrow, Scream, Shout! Factory, the Warner Archive & more
All right, let’s start the week with some more release news…
Kino Lorber has just announced the 3/20 Blu-ray and DVD release of No Orchids for Miss Blandish (1948) as part of its Studio Classics line. Kino is also releasing a double feature Blu-ray of Mike Binder films on 2/27, including Crossing the Bridge and Indian Summer. The company will also release James Cruze’s Covered Wagon (1923) on Blu-ray on 2/20. This is widely considered to be the first Western epic. And on 3/13, look for them to release Revenge of the Cheerleaders (1976) on DVD only for Code Red.
MVD has set The Return of the Swamp Thing for release on Blu-ray on 5/8. The set will include both Blu-ray and DVD in one package. [Read on here…]
