We’ve got some great news to report for you today folks: As we first reported here at The Bits last month, 20th Century Studios is officially announcing the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release of Dan Trachtenberg’s Hulu original film Prey (2022) today! The Newest Entry in the Popular Predator Franchise, Prey Arrives on October 3 With Over 2 Hours of Bonus Content

BURBANK, CA (August 14, 2023) – The chilling prequel to the critically-acclaimed Predator films, 20th Century Studios’ Prey, arrives on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on October 3. As part of a special artist line, a collector’s edition 4K SteelBook, designed by popular digital artist Attila Szarka, will also be available exclusively at Best Buy.

Nominated for six Emmys, including Outstanding Television Movie, the science-fiction film welcomes new viewers into the Predator story while entertaining long-time fans of the celebrated franchise. All formats include a full-length Comanche audio track and never-before-seen bonus content.

The epic Predator legacy continues with this action-thriller set in 1719 on the Great Plains with a band of Comanches. When Naru, a fierce and highly skilled young warrior, sets out to protect her people, the prey she stalks turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator—leading to a vicious and terrifying showdown. In reviews today, Stephen has taken a great in-depth look at Terry Gilliam’s acclaimed Time Bandits (1981) in 4K Ultra HD from the Criterion Collection.

And Tim has weighed in with his thoughts on Chris McKay’s horror comedy Renfield (2023) on Blu-ray from Universal. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, and Awkwafina.

As far as title announcements, the big one today is that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially set the animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 9/5. The Digital version becomes available on 8/8. The 4K will include Dolby Atmos audio, while the Blu-ray will feature 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Extras will include audio commentary with the filmmakers, a deleted scene (Miguel Calling), lyric videos, and 10 behind-the-scenes featurettes (Obscure Spiders and Easter Eggs, I’mma Do My Own Thing, Across the Worlds: Designing New Dimensions, Designing Spiders and Spots, Scratches, Score and The Music of the Multiverse, Escape from Spider-Society, Across the Comics-Verse, Creating the Ultimate Spider-Man Movie, Raising a Hero, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Cast). Note that there will also be retail-exclusive packaging SKUs, including a Steelbook at Best Buy.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has also set Cobra Kai: Season 5 for DVD only release on 9/12. [Read on here...]

In reviews this morning, Dennis has taken a look at Raphael Sbarge’s 2022 Laemmle Theatres documentary Only in Theaters on DVD from Kino Lorber. The film chronicles the 80+ year history of the family-owned cinema chain, which is based in L.A., and looks at the family’s efforts to see it survive the current challenges facing the industry.

Now then... the big news today is two-fold: First, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has just revealed that Babylon 5: The Complete Series is coming to Blu-ray Disc for the first time ever on 12/5! Of course, the series was originally produced and finished in SD resolution only. But its live-action footage was shot on film, so that’s been scanned in 4K and downsampled to HD, while the CGI and VFX shots have been upsampled to HD from SD. But if you’ve seen the series recently as it appears on the Max streaming app, you’ll be familiar with the quality. (Note that it’s presented in the original 1.33 broadcast aspect ratio, and will include English SDH subtitles.) All 110 episodes of the show will be included, along with the 1993 pilot film, The Gathering. It appears that this title will be available via online retailers only, so don’t expect to find it at your local brick-and mortar shop. SRP is $99.99. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below. (Oddly, it doesn’t actually include an image of the Babylon 5 space station itself, which.. ahem... seems like very strange marketing choice.)

And second, here’s some exciting news for fans of 1980s animation: The great Ralph Bakshi has announced on his Facebook page that American Pop (1981) is finally coming to Blu-ray Disc from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on 8/22! [Read on here...]

We have some major release news to report today, but first we’ve got more new disc reviews...

Stephen has delivered his thoughts on Walter Hill’s Streets of Fire (1984) in 4K Ultra HD from Shout! Factory. As fans will no doubt already know, this one is a real cult cinema gem, and it sounds like the 4K release is pretty fantastic, including terrific video and audio quality, as well as a great new feature-length documentary on the making of the film by Daniel Griffith’s Ballyhoo Motion Pictures. Don’t miss it.

Also today, Tim has reviewed another film from Arrow’s Shawscope: Volume One Blu-ray boxed set, specifically Chang Cheh’s Shaolin Temple (1976) (aka Death Chamber).

Stuart has taken a look at Anthony Mann’s El Cid (1961) which is now available in a new Japanese-import Blu-ray release from Happinet.

And finally, Dennis has offered his take on Julien Duvivier’s Flesh and Fantasy (1943) on Blu-ray from Universal Pictures via Vinegar Syndrome.

Now then, the big release news today is big indeed: Disney and 20th Century Studios have just officially announced the 4K Digital release of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water on 3/28. This will include Dolby Atmos audio and over three hours worth of bonus features (more on that in a minute). Studio sources have also reached out to us to confirm that the physical Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release is forthcoming and will be announced at a later date. It simply appears that the studio intends to squeeze every possible dime out of this film at every level of distribution. [Read on here...]

We’re back as promised this evening with more upcoming catalog 4K Ultra HD news and rumors from our studio, industry, and retail sources. Keep in mind, some of these titles are not yet officially announced, so the dates and details are subject to change.

First of all, this is a title we’ve known is coming for a few months now and while it’s not yet been officially announced by the studio, we do have the final cover artwork from retailers: Universal Studios Home Entertainment is expected to release their Universal Classic Monsters: Icons of Horror Collection – Volume 2 box set in 4K Ultra HD on 10/11.

The set will include The Mummy (1932), The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Phantom of the Opera (1943), and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). You can see the cover artwork at left and also below.

It’s also believed that the titles in the studio’s Volume 1 set—Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), The Wolf Man (1941), and The Invisible Man (1932)—will finally be released as single-film SKUs, for sure in the UK and possibly in the US as well. I’m about to dive back into disc reviewing here this afternoon, but before I do we have two new reviews for you this morning and a major piece of release news as well. First those reviews...

Stephen has checked in with his thoughts on a fascinating Russian fantasy film from 1956, Aleksandr Ptushko’s Ilya Muromets, which also happens to be the first Russian film in both anamorphic widescreen and color. Russian cinema is fascinating, and this film is no exception, so it’s definitely worth a look on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome.

Stephen has also given Cy Endfield, Roger Corman, and Gordon Hessler’s De Sade (1969) a look on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber, also a fascinating film from American International Pictures.

Now for that news... Marvel and Disney have just officially set Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 7/26, with the Digital release anticipated for 6/22. [Read on here...]

We’re starting off the new week here at The Bits as we often do, with more new disc reviews...

Stephen has taken a look at Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile (2022) in 4K Ultra HD from 20th Century Studios and Disney. The film was shot in large format on both 65 mm film and 8K digital, so the disc’s image quality is uniquely impressive.

But that’s not all: Stephen has also posted his thoughts on Henry Levin and George Pal’s The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, which has been newly-restored for release on Blu-ray by our friends at The Warner Archive Collection in both 2.85:1 widescreen and also Smilebox format, replicating the look of the film on a 146-degree curved Cinerama screen.
