We’re starting the day with a new Blu-ray review from our own Tim Salmons, who takes look at Antonio Margheriti’s Yor, the Hunter from the Future: 35th Anniversary Edition from Mill Creek Entertainment. The title streeted last Tuesday and is now available. You can read that here.

In release news today, Amazon is now taking pre-orders on 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s The X-Files: The Complete Season 11 on Blu-ray and DVD ($29.99 and $19.99). Street date is still TBA.

Our friends over at Twilight Time have announced their April Blu-ray release slate, which is set to include Paul Schrader’s Auto Focus (2002), Philip Dunne’s Blue Denim (1959), Jacques Demy’s Model Shop (1969), and Martin Ritt’s No Down Payment (1957). [Read on here…]

All right, let’s start the week with some more release news…

Kino Lorber has just announced the 3/20 Blu-ray and DVD release of No Orchids for Miss Blandish (1948) as part of its Studio Classics line. Kino is also releasing a double feature Blu-ray of Mike Binder films on 2/27, including Crossing the Bridge and Indian Summer. The company will also release James Cruze’s Covered Wagon (1923) on Blu-ray on 2/20. This is widely considered to be the first Western epic. And on 3/13, look for them to release Revenge of the Cheerleaders (1976) on DVD only for Code Red.

MVD has set The Return of the Swamp Thing for release on Blu-ray on 5/8. The set will include both Blu-ray and DVD in one package. [Read on here…]

We’re closing out the week today with another pair of new Blu-ray reviews from Tim, including JD’s Revenge from Arrow Video and also Attack Force Z from Umbrella Entertainment. Do give them a look.

In announcement news today, Lionsgate has set Hèctor Hernández Vicens’s Day of the Dead: Bloodline for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/6.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has revealed that it will release Topaze (1933) on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/6. Extras will include audio commentary by film historian Kit Ellinger and a trailer. Better still, Kino will release a The Lion in Winter: 50th Anniversary Edition (1968) on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/13, mastered from a 2016 4K restoration, featuring audio commentary by director Anthony Harvey, an interview with sound recordist Simon Kaye, both 5.1 and 2.0 audio, and the trailer. All right, we’ve got a bunch of server work going on here at The Bits today, but we do have a few big title announcements that we wanted to make sure we updated you on...

First up, Warner Bros Home Entertainment has just officially set DC’s Justice League for release on Blu-ray Combo, Blu-ray 3D Combo, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Combo on 3/13 (SRP $35.99, $44.95, $44.95, and $28.98, respectively), with the Digital release expected on 2/13. Extras on the Blu-ray versions will include 11 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including Road to Justice, Heart of Justice, Technology of the Justice League, Justice League: The New Heroes, The Return of Superman, Steppenwolf the Conqueror, Scene Studies: Revisiting the Amazons, Scene Studies: Wonder Woman’s Rescue, Scene Studies: Heroes Park, Scene Studies: The Tunnel Battle, and Suit Up: The Look of the League). [Note: A Walmart-exclusive retail version will have one deleted scene.] All of the Blu-ray versions will feature Dolby Atmos audio. First of all, in 4K release news, Paramount has set Daddy’s Home 2 for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/20. They’ll have the original Daddy’s Home available on 4K that same day. [Read on here…]

First up, Warner Bros. has set The LEGO Ninjago Movie for release on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 12/19.

Lionsgate’s next pair of Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-ray titles, due on 1/30, are Class of 1999 and Gothic.

Only the Brave is apparently coming from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on Blu-ray, DVD and possibly 4K on 2/6/18. Pre-orders for the first two formats are now open on Amazon.com. [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got a few things for you today...

First, our own Michael Coate posted a great new History, Legacy & Showmanship retrospective last night celebrating Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the occasion of the film’s 40th anniversary. Michael’s column looks back at the film’s initial theatrical run and features another great roundtable discussion of film historians. It’s a good read, so be sure to give it a look.

Now then... a quick commentary. Almost every day, I get asked this question in some form via email or social media: “Why no 3D?” As in: My favorite film was available in 3D in the theater, but how come the studio didn’t release it on Blu-ray 3D for the home? [Read on here…]
