We’ve got a pair of additional Blu-ray reviews for you today...

First of all, Tim has checked out a 1968 film from Sydney Pollack in Kino’s The Scalphunters. I’ve also updated and ported over (from the original Bits site) my own review of review of Fritz Lang’s science fiction classic Metropolis (1927) as released, restored and at long last complete, on Blu-ray by Kino in 2010. Don’t miss them. And note that I’ll be back with another new Blu-ray review tomorrow.  [Read on here…]

In announcement news today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray and DVD release on Fury on 1/27, with a digital release expected on 12/30. This is the Brad Pitt WWII tank film. Both disc versions will include the Blood Brothers featurette, while the Blu-ray will add 50 minutes of deleted and extended scenes, a photo gallery, and 3 more featurettes Director’s Combat Journal, Armored Warriors: The Real Men Inside the Shermans, and Taming the Beast: How to Drive, Fire, & Shoot Inside a 30-Ton Tank).

20th Century Fox has set David Fincher’s Gone Girl for Blu-ray and DVD release on 1/13. The film stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. Extras are scant, but will include audio commentary by Fincher and a 36-page reproduction of the Amazing Amy Tattle Tale children’s book.

20th Century Fox has also set The Book of Life for Blu-ray 3D Combo, Blu-ray Combo, and DVD release on 1/27 as well, written and directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez and produced by Guillermo del Toro. Extras will include tons of featurettes, galleries, and audio commentary by Gutierrez.

Meanwhile, Universal has set the horror film Ouija for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/3.

Universal has also set Peter Pan Live for DVD only release on 12/16.

Lionsgate will release the “coming of age comedy” Laggies for Blu-ray and DVD release on 2/10. The film stars Keira Knightley, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Sam Rockwell.

Lionsgate has also set Revenge of the Green Dragons for Blu-ray and DVD release on 1/13, and the Nicholas Cage action-thriller Dying of the Light for both formats on 2/17.

Magnolia will release the comedy Force Majeure on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/10.

Magnolia has also set Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic for release on Blu-ray on 2/3.

Time Life and StarVista have set The Wonder Years: The Complete Second Season for DVD only release on 2/3 as well.

Olive Films has Amazing Grace due on Blu-ray on 1/27.

Xlrator has The Mule set for Blu-ray and DVD release on 1/20.

GKids has finally officially set the Studio Ghibli documentary The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness for DVD release on 1/27, with the digital HD version available today. Sadly, no Blu-ray no sale on this one for me.

Also, PBS has set the documentaries To Catch a Comet and Hitmakers for DVD only release on 1/13.

Walker, Texas Ranger fans will be pleased to learn that CBS is releasing The Road to Black Bayou on DVD today (12/9).

Here’s a surprise: We’ve been waiting for the day Warner would finally release Wrestling Ernest Hemingway on DVD. It turns out that Warner Archive quietly released it on MOD DVD back in 2010! Thanks to my old friend Matt Rowe (of the excellent MusicTAP website) for pointing this out to me. Sure would love to see that one on Blu-ray.

Finally today, Flicker Alley is currently running an Indiegogo campaign to enable the MOD (Manufactured on Demand) DVD release of “unique, significant, and out-of-print classics from the Blackhawk Films Collection.” The campaign has already met its initial goal, but they have 7 days left so do check out the page and contribute if you’re of the mind. The more money they get, the more great titles they’ll be able to release. You’ll find all the details here.

We’ll leave you today with a look at more new Blu-ray cover artwork, including the final cover for Universal’s The BoxTrolls (due 1/20)...

Gone Girl (Blu-ray Disc)    Fury (Blu-ray Disc)    Book of Life (Blu-ray 3D)

The BoxTrolls (Blu-ray 3D)    The BoxTrolls (Blu-ray Disc)    Book of Life (Blu-ray Disc)

Back tomorrow with more reviews. Stay tuned...
