In terms of catalog titles, DreamWorks and Universal have made the animated The Prince of Egypt (1998) official for release on 4K Ultra HD on 3/14. You can see the cover art below (and you can pre-order it on Amazon as well by clicking on the cover).
Arrow Video has just announced their April Blu-ray and 4K release slate, which will include Sammo Hung’s Heart of the Dragon (1985) aka The First Mission on Blu-ray (US and Canada only) on 4/11, Shigehiro Ozawa’s The Street Fighter Trilogy (1974)—including The Street Fighter, Return of the Street Fighter, and The Street Fighter’s Last Revenge—on Blu-ray (UK only) on 4/17, David Cronenberg’s The Naked Lunch (1991) on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD (in two different cover art versions in the UK only) on 4/17, and finally Basil Dearden’s The Assassination Bureau (1969) on Blu-ray (US and Canada only) and Jon Steven Ward’s Lovers Lane (1999) on Blu-ray (US, UK, and Canada) on 4/25.
Powerhouse Films’ Indicator label has also just revealed their first 4K Ultra HD titles for release in both the US and UK in April, including Jean Rollin’s The Shiver of the Vampires (1971) and Two Orphan Vampires (1997). Street date for each is April 24th. The titles are also coming to Blu-ray on that day as well. Here’s what they look like...
Not to be outdone, Via Vision’s Imprint Films has announced their April Blu-ray slate too, which is set to include Essential Film Noir Collection 4—featuring William Dieterle’s Rope of Sand (1949), Lewis Allen’s Appointment with Danger (1950), Bretaigne Windust’s The Enforcer (1951), Harry Horner’s Beware, My Lovely (1952), and Joel Newton’s Jennifer (1953)—The Tales of Adventure Collection—featuring John Rawlins’ Arabian Nights (1942), Fred de Cordova’s The Desert Hawk (1950), Terence Young’s Zarak (1956), Alfred E. Green’s A Thousand and One Nights (1945), and William Dieterle’s Omar Khayyam (1957)—and Richard Loncraine’s The Haunting of Julia (1977).
It’s worth noting that Omar Khayyam (1957)—a VistaVision title shot on 35 mm film in “horizontal” format for greater resolution—has been remastered from a new 6K scan of the original camera negative, which is apparently a first for a Blu-ray release.
Also today, retail sources (including our friends at HD Movie Source) are now confirming news we first broke here at The Digital Bits back in November (click here for our original post), specifically that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment will be releasing the rest of the Christopher Reeve Superman films on 4K Ultra HD this year. We now have an anticipated street date, which is 4/18. Look for a Superman: 5-Film Collection box set that includes the original Superman: The Movie (already available in 4K), along with Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. The two versions of Superman II will be included on separate discs. The set will not include Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns (2006) and note that there are no plans to release that film in 4K at least this year that we’re currently aware of.
Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace may also be released as individual 4K SKUs that same day, though we don’t yet know if the two versions of Superman II will be available separately or if they’ll be packaged together.
[Editor’s Note: Our old friend Neil S. Bulk—thanks Neil!—points out that 4/18 also happens to be the original release date of Action Comics #1 back in 1938, marking it the official 85th anniversary of the Superman character.]
And a couple Paramount 4K catalog updates...
In addition to the individual Star Trek: The Next Generation films in 4K on 4/4, look for a 4-Film/4K Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection that same day. Also, Flashdance 4K is now tentatively set to street on 4/11.
Our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits has been updated accordingly.
Paramount has also recently made a trio of new catalog titles available Digitally in 4K, including Team America: World Police (2004), Wayne’s World 2 (1993), and Cinema Paradiso (1988 – a Miramax title). So it’s possible these could be released as physical 4K titles in the months ahead. (Note that Cinema Paradiso has previously been released in 4K by Arrow in 2020.)
One more piece of catalog 4K news: NSM Records in Germany has set a House 4K Collection for release in Germany on June 30th, and it’s now available for pre-order on Amazon DE here and also via Amazon UK here. And here’s what it looks like (the image link will take you to Amazon UK)...
Finally today, I’ve just learned that our old friend Mike Fidler has been named as the executive director of the 8K Association! Mike is a longtime industry veteran who served as a senior executive for both Sony and Pioneer, helping to launch and promote the DVD and Blu-ray formats, before going on to lead the DEG (Digital Entertainment Group) as well as the UHD Alliance in support of 4K.
I’ve known Mike for over 20 years in those roles, and I can’t think of a better person to lead the 8K Association. While I don’t anticipate a future 8K physical media format targeted at consumers, I’ll be very curious to see where Mike helps to guide 8K in terms of consumer displays and other home entertainment experiences. (And I’m looking forward to talking with him about all of that!)
Congrats, Mike!
All right, we’ll leave you with a look at the cover artwork for The Prince of Egypt, as well as Duck Dodgers and Women Talking…
Have a great weekend!
