A reminder: HBO’s Watchmen hits Blu-ray & DVD on 6/2 (still no sign of 4K), plus TV’s 12 Monkeys, Creepshow & more
All right, a reminder today: HBO’s Watchmen: Limited Series is due for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 6/2. You can see the cover art at left.
This is not new news (the title was first announced back in February), but it’s worth noting that the street date hasn’t changed due to the pandemic.
Extras on the 3-disc Blu-ray will include Hooded Justice: Origins of a Masked Vigilante, Watchmen: Unmasked, 2019 New York Comic Con, Watchmen: Masked and Dangerous, Character Trailers (for Sister Night, Blond Man, and Looking Glass), Becoming Sister Night, Notes from the Watchmen: Dave Gibbons, Rorschach, Watchmen: Alternate History, It’s Raining Squids, Squid Shelter with Tim Blake Nelson, Andrij Parekh on Directing, Sadiqua Bynum Runs, Jumps and Falls for Sister Night, Blond Man: the Colossal King (The Adrian Veidt Story), Watching the Watchmen, Anatomy of a Fight Scene, Glimpses: The Visual Effects of Watchmen, and the season’s trailer.
Unfortunately, there is still no sign of a physical 4K Ultra HD release in the States (though there is apparently one coming to Germany). [Read on here...]

FINALLY, it’s official: Universal to release Steven Spielberg’s Jaws on 4K Ultra HD on 6/2
All right, after months of “we knew it was coming” to last week’s early studio leak that was quickly pulled back, Universal has finally made it official: Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is coming to 4K Ultra HD on 6/2 in honor of the film’s 45th anniversary. The package will include the film on 4K and Blu-ray with a Digital code, lenticular packaging and a 44-page booklet with introductions, rare photos, storyboards and more from the archives.
Both the 4K UHD disc and the Blu-ray will include The Making of Jaws, The Shark Is Still Working: The Impact & Legacy of Jaws, Jaws: The Restoration, deleted Scenes and outtakes, From the Set, and the film’s theatrical trailer. The Blu-ray will add storyboards, production photos, Marketing Jaws, and The Jaws Phenomenon.
The 4K Ultra HD disc will also include HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision high dynamic range, along with Dolby Atmos audio. Additional audio options will include DTS and Dolby Digital 2.0 mono. And yes, that IS correct: There’s no DTS-X. Also, our sources tell us that the Atmos mix is a 12-channel expansion of the revisionist 7.1 mix done in 2013. The good news is that the original mono options are included. You can see the cover artwork above left and also below. [Read on here...]

The Call of the Wild, Downhill, new Warner Archive, and Shout! details their new The Deer Hunter 4K
It’s kind of a slow news day today, but we do have some more disc reviews for you to check out...
Dennis has posted his thoughts on Franklin Gollings’ Connecting Rooms (1970) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. The film stars Bette Davis and Michael Redgrave.
Also, Tim has taken a look at Ovidio G. Assonitis’ Beyond the Door (1974) on Blu-ray from Arrow Video.
In announcement news today, Fox has set Chris Sanders’ The Call of the Wild for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 5/12. The 4K will include English Dolby Atmos, while the Blu-ray will feature DTS-HD MA. Extras on both will include 4 featurettes (Origins, The On-Set Experience, State of the Art, and The World of the Wild), along with a Digital-only featurette (A Man and His Dog). [Read on here...]
Criterion bows a Bruce Lee box, plus The Hills Run Red, Home Media Awards winners, and a peek at Dune
We’ve got a bit of fun news today, some release news and some other...
First up though, we also have a new disc review. Dennis has just turned in a look at director George Marshall’s classic Destry Rides Again (1939) now on Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection. It’s a classic western starring James Stewart and Marlene Dietrich that’s well worth your time.
And while we’re speaking of Criterion, that brings us to our first bit of release news, which is that Criterion has just announced a Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits Blu-ray box set (Spine# 1036), which is set to include The Big Boss (1971), Fist of Fury (1972), The Way of the Dragon (1972), Enter the Dragon (1973), and Game of Death (1978). New Severin Blu-ray reviews, plus Scream’s Escape from LA extras, additional KL Studio Classics titles & more
All right, we’re closing out another week in pandemic isolation with some new reviews and a bit more announcement news...
First up those reviews... Tim has checked in with a look at FIVE recent Blu-ray titles from our friends at Severin Films—running the gamut from Eurosleaze to erotic to the rarely-seen and undervalued—so here are his thoughts on Just Jaeckin’s Gwendoline (1984 – aka The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak), the Russian genre film Viy (1967), Jess Franco’s Cries of Pleasure (1983) and Night of Open Sex (1983), and Leopoldo Savona’s Byleth: The Demon of Incest (1972).
And yes, we recognize that some of these aren’t for the faint of heart or for mainstream audiences (particularly those titles we had to blank out the cover art on or Google advertising will flag it), but the range of cinema on disc is wide and far-reaching. There’s something for everyone. And they can’t all be Star Wars or Marvel films. So there you go. [Read on here...]
Universal (sort of) sets Jaws for 4K Ultra HD release on June 2nd, plus RIP Second Spin
The news today is brief, but we’ve got a couple things to report today...
First though, Tim has reviewed a couple of Blu-ray titles for you, including Universal’s Munster, Go Home! (1966) from Scream Factory and Bone Tomahawk (2015), a kind of western horror film from RLJ Entertainment starring Kurt Russell.
But the big news today is that Universal is releasing Steven Spielberg’s Jaws as a 45th Anniversary Edition on 4K Ultra HD on 6/2.
Of course, we first mentioned this title was coming many weeks ago here at The Bits. You can now consider the release almost—but not quite—official. [Read on here...]

Paramount launches a new “Paramount Presents” line of premium catalog BDs, plus Impact Films BDs will be ALL REGION & more
Checking in today with some great release news...
First, Paramount has just announced the launch of a new label designed to highlight marquee catalog titles on Blu-ray beginning on 4/21. Paramount Presents will debut with Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction, the 1958 Elvis Presley drama King Creole, and Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief (which celebrates its 65th anniversary this year). Each title will be remastered and will include new bonus content focused on the film and the filmmakers, hosted by historian Leonard Maltin. Each will also include foldout movie poster artwork. You can see what they look like at left and also below.
Very good news indeed—it’s great to see Paramount finally starting to get more aggressive with their catalog releases on disc. In fact, the idea of creating a premium Paramount label for their classic catalog is actually something I’ve been suggesting to them privately for a while now, so it’s great to see it beginning to happen. Now let’s have a few more marquee catalog titles on 4K. We know that the original Top Gun is coming, along with Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, and Days of Thunder. And you can bet that if a new Indiana Jones sequel starts filming this year for release next year, you can almost certainly expect the classic Indy films on 4K in 2021. Let’s go ahead with the classic Star Trek films in 4K, folks! [Read on here...]

The Blues Brothers, BTTF & Jaws 4K confirmed by Uni, plus Shout/Scream’s June slate & Max von Sydow RIP
All right, we’re working on a bunch of things today, but we wanted to chime in quickly with this...
Universal is officially bringing The Blues Brothers, Jaws, and Back to the Future to 4K Ultra HD this year. We’ve been saying that the titles were coming for a while now (because we knew that from our industry sources) and we’ve had the titles listed in our 4K Ultra HD Release List for months.
But I’ve now gotten the studio to confirm on the record that Jaws and Blues Brothers are indeed coming to the format this year (BTTF was confirmed last year). Street date is still TBA, but expect them likely this summer.
I’ve also gotten the studio to confirm that what you see at left is indeed the final 4K cover artwork for John Landis’ The Blues Brothers on the format. [Read on here...]
