We’re rounding things up this week with more new disc reviews, a little bit more new announcement news, and some potentially very significant Disney news. The reviews first...

Stuart has weighed in today on three recent Blu-ray titles, starting with Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ François Truffaut Collection, which includes The Wild Child (1970), Small Change (1976), The Man Who Loved Women (1977), and The Green Room (1978). He’s also checked out a pair of Dwayne Buckle documentaries, including The First VCR and Cassettes Go Hi-Fi from the folks at Vinegar Syndrome. And he’s reviewed the classic BBC series Maigret: Season 1 from Network and Kino Classics.

Also today, Stephen has taken a look at Buzz Kulik’s Sergeant Ryker (1963) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, as well as Jeff Wamester’s animated DC Universe Movie Legion of Super-Heroes in 4K Ultra HD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

And Dennis has checked in with a review of Jack Fessenden’s Foxhole (2021) on Blu-ray from Yellow Veil Pictures. [Read on here...]

Stuart has posted his take on Paolo Heusch and Brunello Rondi’s A Violent Life (1962) on Blu-ray from Raro Video.

Stephen has offered his thoughts on Stuart Gordon’s From Beyond (1986) in 4K Ultra HD from Vinegar Syndrome.

And Tim has gone way down the rabbit hole with Turbine Media’s fantastic new Knight Rider: The Complete Series – 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray box set, a whopping 23-disc release that includes all four seasons of the original Knight Rider with (for the first time ever on home video) all of the original music re-instated. You also get Knight Rider 2000, Knight Rider 2010, and Team Knight Rider: The Complete Series, as well as a bonus disc with legacy extras and new material. This is truly the ultimate collection for fans of the film, and the best part is that it’s an ALL-REGION release. Now then, the big announcement news today is something I’ve personally been lobbying the studio for behind the scenes for well over a decade. And I am absolutely thrilled to see that it’s finally happened: Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has officially set Max Fleischer’s Superman 1941-1943 for Blu-ray and Digital HD release on 5/16! [Read on here...]

Today’s reviews start with Tim’s take on Marquis de Sade’s Justine (1969) in 4K Ultra HD from director Jesús Franco and our friends at Blue Underground.

Also this evening, Stuart has offered his thoughts on François Truffaut’s Mississippi Mermaid (1969) on Blu-ray Disc from the Kino Lorber Studio Classics line, and also Mathieu Amalric’s Hold Me Tight (2021) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.

Now then, the big catalog news today is that Paramount has finally announced a title we first revealed here at The Bits back in December: Mimi Leder’s Deep Impact (1998) is officially set for release in 4K Ultra HD on 5/2. Okay, there’s not a ton of news worth reporting today here at The Bits, but we do have a few quick things for you.

As is often the case, we’ll start with some new disc reviews...

Tim has posted his thoughts on Jim Wynorski’s The Return of the Swamp Thing (1989) in 4K Ultra HD from Lightyear Entertainment. He’s also taken a look at Stuart Barge’s Julius Caesar (1970) on regular Blu-ray from Imprint Films.

And Stephen has given David O. Russell’s Amsterdam (2022) a spin on 4K Ultra HD from 20th Century Studios.

In terms of actual title announcements, Music Box Films has announced that Martika Ramirez Escobar’s Lenor Will Never Die is now available on Digital and is also coming to Blu-ray and DVD on 3/14. [Read on here...]

Well, I forgot that today marks the President’s Day holiday here in the States, so it’s unlikely that there will be any major studio announcements today. But we do have some good release news today and more new disc reviews for you as well...

Tim has posted his take on Narciso Ibáñez Serrador’s The House That Screamed (1970) on Blu-ray from Arrow Video.

Dennis has taken a look at Robert Townsend’s Hollywood Shuffle (1987) on Blu-ray from The Criterion Collection.

And Stuart’s offered his thoughts on Mario Monicelli’s Let’s Hope It’s a Girl (1986) on Blu-ray from Raro Video.

Now then, we’ve confirmed with Disney that the wide-release version of their Cinderella (1950) 4K Ultra HD release is coming on 8/1. And we have the official cover artwork for you, which you can see at left and also below the break. But again, this title will be available first from the Disney Movie Club starting on 3/28. We’ve got a couple more new disc reviews for you today, and a bit more Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release news as well...

First, Stephen has checked out Synapse Films’ wide-release version of Dario Argento’s Phenomena (1985) in 4K Ultra HD.

He’s also reviewed Michael Stanley’s Attack of the Beast Creatures (1985) on Blu-ray Disc from our friends over at AGFA and Vinegar Syndrome.

And while it’s not a disc review, I posted my non-spoiler thoughts on Star Trek: Picard – Season Three here at The Bits last night (in case you missed them). The first episode of the new season is now available for streaming on Paramount+, and all I can say is that there had better be a 4K Ultra HD release forthcoming from Paramount Home Entertainment. (Because I want it!) Enjoy!

Now then, Disney sources have officially confirmed that Cinderella (1950) will be released on 4K Ultra HD widely in stores and from online retailers on 8/1. However, note that the title will be also available as a limited Disney Movie Club exclusive for a few months starting on 3/28. So if you want to get your hands on it earlier, DMC is your ticket. Tim has taken a look at Daniel Haller’s HP Lovecraft adaptation The Dunwich Horror (1970), which is new on Blu-ray from Arrow Video.

Stuart has checked out Hugo Fregonese and Piero Pierotti’s Marco Polo (1962) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Dennis has reviewed Richard Wilson’s Raw Wind in Eden (1958) on Blu-ray, also from KLSC.

And Stephen has offered his thoughts on Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges (2008) on 4K Ultra HD from KLSC, as well as Robert Eggers’ The Northman (2022) in 4K UHD from Universal.

We’ve also got some great release news for you today, starting with this: The good folks at the Criterion Collection have just unveiled their May release slate, which is set to include upgrades of Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire (Spine #490 – 4K UHD) on 5/2 and Seijun Suzuki’s Branded to Kill (Spine #39 – 4K UHD) on 5/9, Peter Bogdanovich’s Targets (Spine #1179 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 5/18, Céline Sciamma’s Petite maman (Spine #1181 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 5/23, and Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise (Spine #1180 – 4K UHD and Blu-ray) on 5/30.

Morning, everyone! We’re kicking off the new week with some great news here at The Digital Bits...

We’re very pleased today to welcome a new member to our coterie of film and disc reviewers—the acclaimed film historian, essayist, and author Stuart Galbraith IV!

If you’re a cinephile, no doubt you’re well acquainted with Stuart’s work already, but here’s a little background.

After graduating from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinema-Television, Stuart worked as an archivist for the USC-Warner Bros. Archives and eventually MGM.

In 2002, he published the first English-language biography of director Akira Kurosawa and actor Toshiro Mifune entitled The Emperor and the Wolf, a book that’s been a part of my own library here at The Bits for years, and one that I can’t recommend more highly.

This of course is one of several books Stuart has written about Japanese cinema, which include Japanese Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films (1994) and Monsters Are Attacking Tokyo! The Incredible World of Japanese Fantasy Films (1998) among others. [Read on here...]

Stephen’s looks at Valerio Zurlini’s Le Soldatesse (1965) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber and Raro Video, Robert Siodmak’s The Devil Strikes at Night (1957) on Blu-ray from Kino Classics, and Matt Reeves’ Cloverfield: 15th Anniversary Limited Edition in 4K Ultra HD Steelbook from Paramount.

And our old friend Dr. Adam Jahnke and yours truly have taken a look at John Sturges’ classic Western, The Magnificent Seven (1960), coming soon on 4K Ultra HD from Shout! Factory.

As usual, look for the new master to include a Dolby Vision HDR grade.
