Warner announces Justice League & Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay, plus Kino reveals Fistful of Dynamite
All right, we’ve got a bunch of server work going on here at The Bits today, but we do have a few big title announcements that we wanted to make sure we updated you on...
First up, Warner Bros Home Entertainment has just officially set DC’s Justice League for release on Blu-ray Combo, Blu-ray 3D Combo, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Combo on 3/13 (SRP $35.99, $44.95, $44.95, and $28.98, respectively), with the Digital release expected on 2/13. Extras on the Blu-ray versions will include 11 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including Road to Justice, Heart of Justice, Technology of the Justice League, Justice League: The New Heroes, The Return of Superman, Steppenwolf the Conqueror, Scene Studies: Revisiting the Amazons, Scene Studies: Wonder Woman’s Rescue, Scene Studies: Heroes Park, Scene Studies: The Tunnel Battle, and Suit Up: The Look of the League). [Note: A Walmart-exclusive retail version will have one deleted scene.] All of the Blu-ray versions will feature Dolby Atmos audio. You can see the cover art for the Blu-ray versions to the left and below. [Read on here…]
Shout! Selects to include The ‘Burbs & Downfall, plus Universal sets Straight Outta Compton for 4K
We have just a couple of quick release announcements and updates to offer you today, before we let you all head out for the weekend…
Shout! Factory has announced The ‘Burbs: Collector’s Edition for release on Blu-ray on 3/20 as part of their Shout Select line.
Also coming that day as part of their Select line is Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Downfall, an absoutely fantastic film about the last days of Hitler in WWII starring Bruno Ganz (and the source of a surprisingly persistent viral YouTube meme you may be familiar with – one of the early versions even referenced The Bits, as some of you longtime readers may recall). Shout! also has Macon County Line coming on 1/16 to the Select line. Extras on these titles are still TBA. [Read on here…]

Warner officially announces Blade Runner: 2049 for Blu-ray, 3D, DVD & 4K Ultra HD on 1/16
All right, no sooner did we post our last column then word came in that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has officially set Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner: 2049 for release on Blu-ray Combo, Blu-ray 3D Combo, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 1/16/18, as expected (SRP $35.99, $44.95, $28.98, and $44.95, respectively). The Digital HD release is set for 12/26.
It appears that the Blu-ray and 4K editions will all feature Dolby Atmos audio. There’s mention of High Dynamic Range in the official press release, but not Dolby Vision, so the HDR is likely HDR10.
Keep in mind that this film was finished as a native 4K Digital Intermediate (with digital capture at 3.4K), so it should look pretty great, especially in Ultra HD. [Read on here…]
Warner announces the Christopher Nolan Collection 4K, plus more reviews & today’s best Amazon Black Friday Week deals!
Let’s get right down to business to start the new week…
First up, we’ve got a trio of new disc reviews for you to check out. I’ve offered my thoughts on Sony’s new A Few Good Men: 25th Anniversary Edition on 4K Ultra HD, which is one of the best film-based catalog titles I’ve seen yet on the format in terms of A/V quality. I’ve also posted a review of Netflix’s Target-exclusive Stranger Things: Season 1 on Ultra HD, which is native 4K but has no HDR and only lossy audio – a real disappointment, all things considered. Meanwhile, Tim has posted his review of Shout! Factory’s new Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXXIX box set on DVD. Note that more Blu-ray and 4K reviews are on the way all this week, so keep checking back. [Read on here…]

Warner Bros sets IT for BD, DVD & 4K Ultra HD in January
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just officially set IT for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 1/9/2018 (SRP $35.99, $28.98, and $44.95, respectively). The Digital HD release is expected on 12/19. These SKUs will all include the theatrical version of the film. (Note that a Director’s Cut is rumored for release at a later date in 2018, but that is not yet confirmed.) The film is based on the book by Stephen King and is directed by Andy Muschietti. The Blu-ray versions will include deleted scenes and 3 featurettes (Pennywise Lives!, The Losers’ Club, and Author of Fear). Both will include Dolby Atmos audio and the 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR. [Read on here…]
Warner Bros Home Entertainment sets Blade Runner: The Final Cut for 4K Ultra HD release on 9/5
All right, we’ve got big news for you today. We’ve been saying this was coming for quite a while now here at The Bits, given that this is the film’s 35th anniversary year and that its long-awaited sequel was coming soon to theaters, but Warner Bros Home Entertainment has finally made it official: Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner: The Final Cut is coming to the 4K Ultra HD format on 9/5.
The Ultra HD release will include the previous Blu-ray edition (you can read our epic and in-depth review of that package here) in addition to the 4K disc, with its 7+ hours of bonus features (we’re waiting to see the exact disc configuration to determine if the alternate cuts will be included or if it’s just The Final Cut with extras), as well as a digital copy. The audio will be Dolby Atmos. There’s no word whether Dolby Vision HDR is included or not yet (there was no mention of it in the press release). The package will sell for an SRP of $44.95. October Sky, It Came from Outer Space & The Ghost and Mr. Chicken at Best Buy, plus new Blu-ray reviews
We’re closing out the week here at The Bits with another quick column, but we have some great stuff for you to check out...
First, I’ve turned in an in-depth review of Warner’s The Iron Giant: Signature Edition on Blu-ray. Trust me, the disc is not to be missed. It includes both the theatrical and Signature versions of the film, plus new extras, and nearly all of the legacy DVD special features too. The disc streets next Tuesday (9/6). Check out my review here.
Also today, our old friend Jack Jameson weighs in this afternoon on Arrow Video’s new Female Prisoner Scorpion: The Complete Collection Blu-ray box set, which includes the films Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion, Female Prisoner Scorpion: Jailhouse 41, Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable, and Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701’s Grudge Song, plus extras. The series stars Meiko Kaji of Lady Snowblood fame, who was the inspiration for Uma Thurman’s character in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films. [Read on here…]

Roddenberry Vault announced, Hunger Games goes 4K & Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant: Signature Edition is terrific
All right, today’s post is going to be a quick one, as I’m celebrating my 26th wedding anniversary with my lovely wife, Sarah. But we do have a couple bits of very good news for you…
The first big announcement today is that CBS, Paramount, and the estate of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry are officially releasing a 3-disc Blu-ray collection on 12/13 called Star Trek: The Original Series – The Roddenberry Vault. Produced by our old friend Roger Lay, Jr., who created many of the amazing features for the recent Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-rays, this set will contain 12 classic Original Series episodes (specifically The Corbomite Maneuver, Arena, Space Seed, This Side of Paradise, The Devil in the Dark, The City on the Edge of Forever, Operation – Annihilate!, Metamorphosis, Who Mourns for Adonais?, Mirror, Mirror, The Trouble with Tribbles, and Return to Tomorrow) along with 3 new documentaries, including Inside the Roddenberry Vault (featuring Rod Roddenberry looking at long-lost film reels), Star Trek: Revisiting a Classic (a retrospective look at back at the making of the series), and Strange New Worlds: Visualizing the Fantastic (a look at the series’ visual effects and futuristic technology). Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, Billions: S1, a Middle-Earth update & new Blu-ray reviews
We have another quick update today, but we do have some interesting things for you...
First of all, our own Tim Salmons has just turned in his thoughts on Scream Factory’s new The Thing: Collector’s Edition, and says he believes it’s their best Blu-ray release yet. The title now streets on 10/11 and it’s going to be well worth your time. So do give it a look.
Also, I’ve just spent the last day or so going through Madman Entertainment’s new Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: The Complete Series Blu-ray box set, which streeted on 8/17 in Australia and New Zealand, and arrives here in the States via Amazon on 8/26 (note that the discs are listed as Region B but are, in fact, ALL REGION). All the company had to work with is HD scans of the Universal’s syndication masters for these episodes, but they’ve compiled a pretty wonderful Blu-ray release – one I’ve really enjoyed going through. So do give that a look today as well. [Read on here…]

For starters, we’ve got a new review for you this afternoon, thanks to our own Tim Salmons, featuring Stars’ new Ash vs Evil Dead: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray Disc. The title arrives in stores tomorrow, and it’s pretty damn good. Do give it a look.
