Welcome back to my Dailies feature, Pick-Ups!

It’s designed to feature older Blu-ray and DVD releases that we haven’t gotten around to reviewing until now (sorry about that!), as well as highlight select international releases and other unique titles on disc. I try to do this column on a weekly basis, so be sure to check back regularly for more titles that are worthy of your attention.

Being a big fan of the cult TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000, I decided that it was time for The Bits to have all of the wonderful boxed sets available from Shout! Factory in our database. [Read on here...]

Now where was I?

Sorry, I’ve not been here. I missed a bit – I’ll admit it and it for sure wasn’t to do with health or disinterest or a lack in passion. I just had to do stuff. But now I’m back.

But I come with good stories. Specifically regarding how movie awards season works.  [Read on here...]

We’re kicking off the new week with a bunch more new release and catalog announcement news. Also just a quick note: We’re finally making progress getting back to those of you who e-mailed us last week while we were working on CES-related coverage, so thanks for your patience.

Now then, in announcement news today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the fully remastered Blu-ray release of My Girl and Troop Beverly Hills on 3/17. My Girl will include all-new commentary with writer Laurice Molinari, 2 new featurettes (A Day on set: Bingo! and A Day on Set: First Kiss), along with the original 1991 featurette. Troop Beverly Hills will include never-before-seen deleted scenes and 2 all-new featurettes (The Real Phyllis Nefler: Ava Ostern Fries and Shelley Long Remembers Troop Beverly Hills).  [Read on here…]

We’re kicking the week off with a new Blu-ray review. This one is my look at Network’s new Space: 1999 – The Bringers of Wonder: Special Edition teaser disc, designed to promote the late 2015 release of Space: 1999 – Season Two. Keep in mind when reading the review that it’s a Region B disc. But if you’re a fan of Space: 1999, the review (and the disc if you have an all-region player) is worth a look.  [Read on here…]

Today’s Hell Plaza Oktoberfest Blu-ray review from Dr. Jahnke is another great one from Scream Factory – Brian de Palma’s 1974 cult classic Phantom of Paradise. It’s well worth your time, so do check out both Adam’s review and the film on Blu-ray.

Now then... I’m about six hours into a return to Middle-Earth with Warner’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – Extended Edition Blu-ray. But that means I’ve still got like ten hours of viewing to go. The disc has no less than TEN hours of documentary content, plus the film is over three hours (with about 25 minutes of new and extended footage) and has an audio commentary too. So I would say plan on reading my full review of the 5-disc BD set bright and early on Monday morning here at The Bits.  [Read on here…]

All right, this will be a bit of a quick post because there’s not a lot of news to report and we’re working on new Blu-ray reviews for you guys. As such, we have three for you today.

Dr. Jahnke’s Hell Plaza Oktoberfest review this morning is a dandy – Scream Factory’s new Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut – Limited Edition Blu-ray set. It’s another home run from a company that seems to do nothing but these days.

Speaking of which, I’ve checked in today with a review of Shout! Factory’s outstanding and remastered Pee-wee’s Playhouse: The Complete Series box set on Blu-ray – a title we first revealed at our panel way back at San Diego Comic-Con in 2013. The remastering and extras were personally supervised by Pee-wee himself, Paul Reubens, and the result is pretty impressive.  [Read on here…]

We kick off the new week with another new Hell Plaza Oktoberfest review from Dr. Jahnke, this time featuring a look at David Cronenberg’s Scanners as released on Blu-ray from Criterion. Don’t miss it!

In announcement news today, Warner Home Video has moved the street date for its Batman: 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray to 12/9 (from 11/11). Keep in mind, the only new feature on this disc is the Batman: The Birth of the Modern Blockbuster featurette.  [Read on here…]
