Well... we now have just two and a half days left in the damnable misery that has been Planet Earth in the year 2020. But we hope these last few days and weeks at least have found you all safe, well, and enjoying the holiday season as best you can. And to those of you who have lost friends, family members, and other loved ones to COVID this year (and we here at The Bits are among you), we send out our love and support. We certainly wish each and every one of you better times ahead in 2021.

Around this time, of course, seemingly every website and media outlet on the planet starts to roll out their annual “Best of” lists for the previous year. At one time, many years ago, The Digital Bits even held its own Bitsy Awards to honor the best DVD and Blu-ray titles of the previous year. But the home video industry became so inconsistent with its product—and streaming delivery so dominant—that we finally stopped doing it. It was just too frustrating to try to organize and coordinate.

Still, if this pandemic has had any silver lining at all, it’s that the industry as a whole has been reminded that there is yet some profit to be made in the minting of 5-inch silver discs with movies and TV shows on them. The 4K Ultra HD format in particular has benefitted from this trend. And as a number of Bits readers have asked us for our thoughts on the best titles of our collective pandemic year, we decided to put our heads together to compile a list of those we found most notable.

In fact, we’ve decided to revive our old friend Bitsy! So today we’re happy to present The Bitsy List for 2020, honoring the best Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD titles of the year. [Read on here...]

Now... keep in mind that the titles we’ve compiled here could be notable for any number of different reasons or combinations thereof. They might be long-awaited, landmark, or particularly unexpected titles. They might feature stunning video and/or audio quality. They might include surprisingly good or comprehensive special features at a time when such things have tended to fall by the wayside. Or they might just be particularly well-crafted and well-targeted to the most diehard fans of that film or TV series.

It’s also possible that we might have overlooked a title or two, and if that’s the case we apologize in advance. In going back to review all of the many movie disc releases this year, we were actually surprised at the number we’d almost forgotten about. There were some notable titles released very early in the year that feel like they came out a decade ago now, such has been the nature of 2020 for all of us.

But with all of that said, here are our picks for the twenty best Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD releases of 2020. These are presented in no particular order. Our intent is simply to provide each of you, our readers, with a list of titles that are worthy of your time, attention, and hard-earned dollars. We’ve reviewed most of these titles here at The Bits, so we’ve provided a link to our thoughts where available...

Now then, in the process of compiling this list, there were many other titles that we considered for inclusion—and even still we’ve probably missed a few. But we thought we’d list these “honorable mentions” here too, as you may find some of them just as interesting as our favorite picks above. We haven’t reviewed as many of these here at The Bits, but a review link has again been included where available...

2020 HONORABLE MENTIONS

So there you go! Many of these titles can be purchased now at Amazon.com and Zavvi US (and for you UK readers at Amazon.co.uk and Zavvi UK). Doing so though our links helps to support our work here at The Bits which we appreciate. We think all of them are worthy of your attention.

A couple last notes today: News updates here will be fewer than usual for the next week or so, as we end the year and work though the New Year’s holiday. But we’ll still be posting disc reviews this week, so be sure to watch for those.

And thanks as always for reading The Digital Bits. We appreciate each and every one of you, our readers, more than we can possibly say in words.

Happy Holidays to all!
