All right, this is just a quick post this afternoon.  I journeyed out to Joshua Tree National Park last night to see the peak of the Perseid meteor shower.  I have to say, it was pretty spectacular – in four hours of viewing I managed to take in some 363 meteors, including some really big bright ones.  Lovely show.  If you’ve got clear skies this evening, do yourself a favor and take a peek out at the sky tonight – the shower’s still going for the next couple nights.

Meanwhile today, I’ve got a Blu-ray review double-feature for you Star Trek fans, featuring my take on CBS’ recent Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season Four and also the new Star Trek: Enterprise – Season Two, which streets next Tuesday (8/20).  Both are good, but I have to say you Enterprise fans are going to be really blown away by the extras on Season Two.  Check out the reviews for all the details.  I’ll tell you, it’s sure a good time to be a fan of TV Trek[…]

In announcement news today, Universal has set the horror/thriller The Purge for Blu-ray Combo and DVD release on 10/8.  Looks like the only major extras will be the Surviving the Night: The Making of The Purge featurette.

Meanwhile, Sony has set The Kings of Summer for Blu-ray and DVD release on 9/24, followed by This Is The End on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/1.  They’re also releasing the Sony Pictures Classics title Fill the Void on DVD only on 9/24.

Shout! Factory has set a Mystery Science Theater 3000: 25th Anniversary Edition for DVD release on 11/26.  From the press release the set will include the films “Moon Zero Two, The Day The Earth Froze, The Leech Woman and Gorgo.  Also included are all new bonus features including the three-part documentary Return to Eden Prairie: 25 Years Of Mystery Science Theater 3000, Life After MST3K: Mary Jo Pehl, Ninth Wonder of the World: The Making of Gorgo (MST3K Edition), Last Flight of Joel Robinson, MST Hour wraps, four exclusive mini-posters by artist Steve Vance, and more!”  The box will also include a bonus disc with a double feature of the films Mitchell and The Brain That Wouldn’t Die.

And Lionsgate will release The Avengers – The Complete Emma Peel Megaset and 2000 Yankees World Series Collector’s Edition on DVD on 10/8, followed by Prayers for Bobby on DVD on 10/15 and a History Channel WW II: 3-Film Collection (includes WWII in HD, WWII in HD: The Air War and WWII from Space) on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/22.  Lionsgate will also release the Kristen Wiig comedy Girl Most Likely on Blu-ray and DVD on 11/5.

Finally, Cohen Media Group has set the Spanish Best Picture-winner Blancanieves for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 9/3.

Here’s a look at the cover artwork for Fox’s Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Fantastic Voyage (due 10/8), as well as MPI/Dark Sky’s Frankenstein’s Army (due 9/10)…
