We’re starting as always with new disc reviews today, including…

My review of Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress (1958) in 4K Ultra HD from the British Film Institute.

Tim’s thoughts on Tibor Takács’ I, Madman (1989) on Blu-ray from Kino Cult, Imprint’s Flesh and Fantasy / Dead of Night Blu-ray box set, Brett Ratner’s Money Talks (1997) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection, and Joel Schumacher’s St. Elmo’s Fire (1985) in 4K Ultra HD from Sony.

Dennis’ take on Roy Rowland’s Two Weeks with Love (1950) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection and Cy Endfield’s Jet Storm (1959) on Blu-ray from Imprint.

And Stuart’s thoughts on Basil Dearden’s Out of the Clouds (1955) on Blu-ray from Indicator.

All right, first things first today: I did indeed receive my Superman: 5-Film Collection 4K check discs yesterday from Warner Bros. Customer Service. The four discs—Superman: The Movie, Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, and Superman IV—came in paper sleeves, wrapped in a layer of bubble wrap in a padded envelope (they shipped from Technicolor Valencia in Valencia CA). For the record, they look and sound great—it does indeed appear that all of the A/V issues that needed fixing have been fixed. I’ll post a review of a couple of the discs soon. So they are shipping out, and again: contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Make sure you include your mailing address and some kind of proof of purchase (an order screenshot, a product/packaging photo, etc). [Editor’s Note: Per Bits reader/filmmaker Oliver H, UK customers who need replacement discs can contact: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.]

Also today, it does seem that in addition the Amazon-exclusive Superman: 5-Film Collection 4K Steelbook set, Warner will be re-issuing a wide-release version of the Collection on 10/21, along with a new re-issue of Superman: The Movie in 4K. And these should also be the new fixed discs. You can find the pre-order pages here and here. [Read on here...]

Speaking of pre-order pages, the ones for Disney’s TRON and TRON Legacy in 4K Steelbook on Amazon have apparently been pulled down. I’ve asked both Disney and Sony for an update. My suspicion is that they’re down because demand is once again exceeding supply. And I do expect that at some point, the pages will return. (I haven’t checked other retailers, but if you’re trying to get your order in, make sure you try DiabolikDVD, Walmart, Amazon UK, etc.)

Now then, the big NEW release news is that our friends at the Warner Archive Collection have just set a 6-disc Tom and Jerry: The Golden Era Anthology (1940-1958) Blu-ray box set for release on 12/2, that will include all 114 theatrical shorts in remastered 1080p HD! That’s definitely a holy grail release for classic animation fans! The set will include no less than twenty audio commentary tracks, and Disc Six in the set contains more than three hours of bonus features. Here’s what the set looks like…

Tom and Jerry: The Golden Era Anthology (Blu-ray Disc)

In other news today, Warner Bros. Home entertainment has set The Handmaid’s Tale: The Complete Series for DVD only release on 12/2.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics will release The Death Wish Collection (1974-1994) box set on 11/25, a 5-disc Blu-ray set that includes all five films in the series.

In the UK, StudioCanal has announced The Agatha Christie Collection, a new 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray box set that includes Murder on the Orient Express (1974), Death on the Nile (1978), The Mirror Crack’d (1980), and Evil Under the Sun (1982), plus a 64-page booklet, a set of posters, lots of legacy extras, and some new ones as well. This is part of the studio’s Vintage Classics label. The UK street date is November 24th.

The Agatha Christie Collection (4K Ultra HD)

Also in the UK, Eureka has announced Howard Hawks’ Rio Lobo (1970) and Kinji Fukasaku’s Shogun’s Samurai (1978) for Blu-ray release on November 17th. And following on November 24th on Blu-ray is the Fantomas Returns! The Fantomas Trilogy (1964-67) Blu-ray box set.

And for you music fans: Rhino has just announced a new Blu-ray Audio box set, The Doors: Immersed (1967-1971), that includes all six of the band’s studio albums with new Dolby Atmos mixes. That will street on 10/24 (SRP $79.98).

Finally today, our friend Tim Millard has just shared a new episode of his excellent The Extras podcast featuring Warner Archive’s George Feltenstein and the great animation historian Jerry Beck talking about the new Tom and Jerry box set. You can watch that here below…

That’s all for now! Stay tuned…
