Afternoon, folks! We’ve got a late Bits post for you today with some reviews and catch up on a bit of release news as well. First, those reviews...

Tim has checked in with his thoughts on Douglas Trumbull’s Silent Running (1972), now available on Blu-ray from our friends at Arrow Video.

He’s also posted a review of Douglas Sirk’s Taza, Son of Cochise (1954), a classic Technicolor western staring Rock Hudson, now available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. The disc includes a new 3D presentation restored by the 3D Film Archive as well.

Not done yet: Tim has also reviewed Terence Fisher’s The Brides of Dracula (1960), the Hammer Films classic staring Peter Cushing newly available on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from the good folks over at Scream Factory.

And finally, Dennis has checked in with his thoughts on Mario Camerini and Mario Bava’s Ulysses (1954) on Blu-ray, also from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. [Read on here...]

Today’s update on The Bits is going to be quick because, with a little luck, I should be working on our review of Universal’s Back to the Future Trilogy in 4K by the end of the day.

In the meantime, Tim has posted a review of Kevin Smith’s Mallrats, as recently released on Blu-ray by Arrow Video. Sounds like it’s a pretty good disc, so do give it a look.

Speaking of reviews, we’d like to call your attention once more to Tim’s review of the Friday the 13th Collection: Deluxe Edition Blu-ray box set. Fans (and Shout!/Scream Factory) have discovered three errors in the set, which has led Shout! to establish a disc exchange program. Specifically, there are errors in the Blu-ray discs of Friday the 13th: Part III, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, and Jason X. We’ve posted the exact details and exchange program instructions at the end of the second part of Tim’s review (click here for that). All right, today’s post is going to be a quick one and for a good reason: Today, my wife and I celebrate our 30th anniversary. But know that I have a number new of Blu-ray and 4K reviews cooking that I’ll start posting this week.

We also have a review from Dennis today of Guy Hamilton’s 1980 film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s The Mirror Crack’d on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. As some of you may know, Guy Hamilton was also the director of the Bond film Goldfinger. You can find Dennis’ thoughts here.

Now then, we have a couple of good pieces of announcement news today...

Lionsgate has set Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass for release on 4K Ultra HD in Steelbook on 11/3. This is the same disc released on the format earlier, just in the new packaging. Extras include 2 featurettes (A New Kind of Superhero: The Making of Kick-Ass and It’s On! The Comic Book Origin of Kick-Ass), audio commentary by director Matthew Vaughn, a Marketing Archive, and (on the Blu-ray only) The Art of Kick-Ass Gallery. Look for Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio on the UHD. SRP is just $24.99. [Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got some interesting Blu-ray and 4K news for you today, but first...

Bill & Ted Face the Music is now officially available via multiple digital/streaming services. Amazon currently has it on their Prime Video service for a $19.99 rental and a $24.99 digital purchase, both in full 4K (click here for that).

The good news is that Rotten Tomatoes shows an 82% “fresh” score this afternoon, and word I’ve heard from friends who have seen it is that it’s a worthy and enjoyable sequel. And I would expect nothing less from Dean Parisot, the director of Galaxy Quest. So great news indeed.

Now then, our friends at Arrow Video have just announced their November slate of Blu-ray and 4K titles, and there are some good ones.

For the US, Canada, and the UK, they’ve got Lake Michigan Monster and Burst City coming to Blu-ray (on November 2 and 9, respectively). For the US and Canada only, they have Silent Running coming to Blu-ray on November 17. Then for the UK only, they have Abel Ferrera’s King of New York coming to Blu-ray and 4K on November 16, followed by David Cronenberg’s Crash on Blu-ray and 4K on November 30. [Read on here...]
