We’re starting out here at The Bits today with a new Blu-ray review from Jim Hemphill, featuring Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s The Honey Pot (1967) from Kino Lorber.
Also today, our own Michael Coate has posted a new installment of his History, Legacy & Showmanship column here on The Bits in which he celebrates the 50th anniversary of TV’s Lost in Space and also today’s release of Lost in Space: The Complete Series on Blu-ray by 20th Century Fox. His piece includes a great interview with the set’s producer, Kevin Burns. We plan to post a review of the Blu-ray set as soon as Fox sends review materials, so be sure to watch for it. In the meantime, enjoy Michael’s column. [Read on here…]

The Biggest Movie Story in America
I had to sit on maybe the biggest movie story in America. For a long time. And now that it’s been completed and is over, I’m shocked that the whole thing hasn’t been on the front page of The New York Times.
I’ve perhaps casually mentioned that I helped create (didn’t get in the way of) a film school here in Oklahoma City, actually at Oklahoma City Community College. The idea was, unlike film degrees that are based on watching and studying themes and points of view and reading scripts, the creative side, so to speak, to offer a technical, hands on degree program, why a community college was selected in the first place. And to enhance the experience, we got the finest equipment in the world – Avid editors and cameras and lenses and lights and then, through a lot of hard work from a lot of good people, here came the ultimate – a full end studio, built to the specs of an actual Hollywood soundstage. If another state funded school has a facility like this, I’d like to see it. [Read on here...]
Blu-ray News – New Hobbit: Five Armies – EE details, plus Holy Grail, Spy, W.C Fields, Garp & Dressed to Kill update
[Editor’s Note: Be sure to like TheDigitalBits.com page on Facebook for breaking news, site updates on the go, discussion with our staff and other readers, giveaways and more!]
We’ve got more interesting Blu-ray and DVD release news for you today…
First, while Warner Home Video hasn’t yet announced the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – Extended Edition yet (tentatively due on either 11/3, 11/10 or 11/17), we do know a few things about the release. First, it’s going to be about 20 minutes longer than the theatrical cut (in the neighborhood of 164 minutes long). Jackson had said previously the extended matertial would be about 30 minutes, but I’ve managed to confirm the 164 minute runtime with sources directly involved at WingNut Films, who tell me that the footage is “significant” and most of it has been added to the battle at the end. Second, it’s going to be screened in theaters in October, as part of a worldwide, week-long The Hobbit: Extended Edition screening event in theaters (you can see the AMC listing here, which includes the 3 hour run time, and The One Ring.net has more here). The Extended Edition of An Unexpected Journey will screen on 10/5, followed by the EE of The Desolation of Smaug on 10/7, and finally the EE or The Battle of the Five Armies on 10/13. Third, we now know that The Battle of the Five Armies – Extended Edition has received an R-rating from the MPAA (more here at Rope of Silicon). We expect an official Blu-ray release announcement from Warner any time now. Of course, we’ll post the details as soon as we have them. [Read on here…]

All right, folks. Sorry I missed yesterday’s post and that today’s is a little brief. I’ve been dealing with a medical concern over the last week or so – since returning to Comic-Con – and it’s had me worried and more than a little preoccupied. Fortunately, with the help of a very fine doctor, I got to the bottom of it yesterday, and it turned out not to be serious, easily addressable and all is well. Whew! So anyway, I’ve got a quick post for you today, and then I’ll be back tomorrow with a lot more. [Read on here…]

Well... I'm spending this first day of the new week, post Memorial Day, to get myself settled into a new computer. After years of loyal service, my old PC revealed a terminal flaw back in December, so I bought a new one that I'm affectionately calling the WOPR. But as I've been incredibly busy of late, getting all my files moved over and organized, and getting all the needed software installed and whatnot, has taken several months. So forgive me if today's update is a quick one as I finish up that process.
We have a bunch of reviews we're working on for posting hopefully this week, including Universal's new classic Battlestar Galactica box set. Meanwhile, we have a quick release news update for you. [Read on here…]

On Robert Altman (and a New Biography on his Life and Work)
Robert Altman said his last “that’s a wrap,” can you believe it, some eight or nine years ago and it seems as though any hope of mainstream studio films with emotional weight, sharp characters, social satire and natural, cliché free dialogue was buried right next to him.
Every Hollywood director since the beginning of the medium owes a debt to Robert Altman. His style was so distinctive, so fresh and so natural that people would say to themselves, “Oh that’s what directors do.” [Read on here...]
