All right, we’ve got a LOT of ground to cover today for you 4K Ultra HD catalog fans, especially those of you who like new cover artwork (because we’ve got a bunch for it for you). But first as always, we’ve got a couple more new disc reviews for you to check out...

First, Dennis has checked out Sidney Lanfield’s Sorrowful Jones (1949) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Tim has also reviewed Rafael Romero Marchent’s Santo vs Dr. Death (1973) on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome.

Now then, let’s get to come 4K catalog news. We’ll start with a quickie: Our friends at Kino Lorber Studio Classics have confirmed over the weekend that they’re working on a 4K UHD release of Stephen King’s Cujo (1983), as directed by Lewis Teague. As usual, look for the new master to include a Dolby Vision HDR grade.

Any Star Trek fans in the house? Well, we have your first look at the 4K Ultra HD cover artwork for Paramount’s forthcoming Star Trek: The Next Generation catalog films: Generations (1994), First Contact (1996), Insurrection (1998), and Nemesis (2002). [Read on here...]

We’re finishing the week off with a trio of new disc reviews here at The Bits...

Tim has reviewed another film in Arrow’s Shawscope: Volume One Blu-ray box set, specifically Chang Cheh and Hsueh Li Pao’s The Boxer from Shantung (1972).

Stephen has taken a look at Todd Haynes’ music documentary The Velvet Underground (2021) on Blu-ray from The Criterion Collection.

And Stephen and yours truly have given Ryan Coogler’s latest MCU installment Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) a spin on 4K Ultra HD from Marvel and Disney.

In terms of catalog release news today, our retail sources are reporting that Paramount will be bringing F. Gary Gray’s The Italian Job (2003) remake and Antoine Fuqua’s Shooter (2007)—a wide-release Amaray, as the film was released as a 4K Steelbook last year—to Ultra HD likely on 5/16. We’ve confirmed that Mimi Leder’s Deep Impact (1998) is coming to 4K as well in the next few months (street date is TBD). [Read on here...]

We’ve got a couple more new disc reviews, some release news, and more big 4K Ultra HD catalog updates for you all this afternoon to start Christmas week off right. First up, the reviews...

I’ve taken a look at Blue Underground’s new wide-release 4K Ultra HD edition of Don Taylor’s The Final Countdown (1980), with a bit of help from our own Tim Salmons.

Dennis has turned in his thoughts on George Seaton’s The Counterfeit Traitor (1962) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics and also Daniel Mann’s The Rose Tattoo (1955) on Blu-ray from Imprint Films and Via Vision Entertainment.

And Stephen has delivered a look at Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers (2002) in 4K Ultra HD from Scream Factory.

Well, the big news this week is so big that we’re going to address it right off the top: In a sudden and unexpected move, Disney’s board of directors has ousted CEO Bob Chapek and re-hired Bob Iger. The news came out of the blue on Sunday night and seems to have taken everyone by surprise. Bob Iger of course was the company’s previous CEO, who took over for Michael Eisner—the man who’d served in that role for over two decades at that point—back in 2005. It was under Iger’s watch that Disney acquired Pixar, Marvel Entertainment, Lucasfilm, and the film division of 20th Century Fox. He also laid the groundwork for the launch of Disney+ in 2019.

Chapek was no stranger to Disney, having joined the company in 1993 as the director of marketing for Buena Vista Home Entertainment. In this capacity he helped steer Disney through the “Golden Age” of DVD and eventually the launch of Blu-ray, which is how I came to know him. He was so successful in that capacity that he was promoted to president of Home Entertainment in 2006, and eventually took over at Disney Consumer Products (in 2011) and Parks and Resorts (in 2015), which seemed to make him a natural fit to become CEO of Disney himself when Iger eventually stepped down.

But apparently, Iger and Chapek did not often see eye to eye. Iger, who could (and probably should) have worked more aggressively to groom a clear successor to lead the company in his own image, failed to do so, resulting in Chapek’s elevation to CEO in 2020. But Chapek’s reign was troubled from the very start, stricken first by the COVID-19 pandemic and next by a series of public “self-owns” and media missteps. [Read on here...]

And Dennis has delivered his take on George Marshall’s Fancy Pants (1950) on Blu-ray, also from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Stephen has taken a look at Ben Stiller’s uneven Vietnam war comedy Tropic Thunder (2008) in 4K Ultra HD from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Dennis has offered his thoughts on Alexander Hall’s I Am the Law (1938) on Blu-ray from Imprint films.

And I’ve taken a look at Universal’s new 4K Ultra HD release of Robert Mulligan’s To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), with an assist by our old friend Dr. Adam Jahnke via his thoughts on the film itself.

In announcement news today, 20th Century Studios and New Regency have set David O. Russell’s Amsterdam for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 12/6, with the Digital release expected on 11/11. Look for the 4K to include HDR10 high dynamic range, Dolby Atmos audio, and one extra: Welcome to Amsterdam. [Read on here...]

We’ve got just two quick news items to report for you this afternoon, a quick site update, and another new disc review to share with you. As always, the review comes first...

I’ve just posted our very in-depth review of Michael Curtiz’s classic cinema masterpiece Casablanca (1942) as newly remastered in 4K Ultra HD by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging and released on physical disc by our friends at Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

There are precious few films that—no matter how often you see them—you finish watching and just immediately think, “Well, that’s a masterpiece.” Casablanca is one of them. The film never gets old. It’s one of the all-time classics. There’s a real argument to be made that it’s the single best film produced in the Golden Age of the Hollywood studio system.

Longtime Bits readers will probably remember that our dear friend and Classic Coming Attractions columnist Barrie Maxwell—who passed away in 2012—wrote a terrific review of this film here at The Bits when it first appeared on HD disc in 2007. Barrie’s enthusiasm for the film shines through in every word, so I’ve taken his thoughts on the film and updated them to include my own commentary on the A/V quality and extras on Warner’s new 4K release.

Whether you’ve seen this film a hundred times or never before, it’s an experience that’s not to be missed, and the new 4K disc is certainly the best way to do so. So I hope you enjoy both the review (linked here) and the disc when you get your hands on it this coming week. [Read on here...]

Yes, it’s true!

This is information I first heard from industry insiders about six months ago, but was asked to keep quiet about to allow the work to be completed. But retailers are just now starting to catch wind of it, so I can unofficially confirm it here:

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is planning to release Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace in 4K Ultra HD in early 2023!

Superman II will include both the original theatrical version and the Richard Donner Cut.

Our sources suggest that—like Superman: The Movie in 4K—all three of these will feature Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Street date is still TBA on these officially, however we’ve been hearing Q2 2023, and Amazon UK has just leaked a 3 April street date for Superman III on their website (click here for that).

Do keep in mind that none of this should be considered 100% kosher and official until the studio makes their actual announcements in the weeks and months ahead. But Superman fans should be very happy around April of next year. [Read on here...]

Welcome to a new week, Bits-ers! And we’re starting with the week with some great new release news...

The big headline is that the Criterion Collection has just announced their January 2023 release slate, and it’s got something for everyone.

It starts on January 3rd with Terry Gilliam’s The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) (Spine #1166 – 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo and Blu-ray), featuring a new 4K restoration approved by the director with Dolby Vision HDR. The set will also include the film on Blu-ray along with a third Blu-ray of special features.

Among those are many legacy extras along with a new video essay by critic/filmmaker David Cairns and Gilliam’s 1974 animated short Miracle of Flight.

Next up is John M. Stahl’s Imitation of Life (1934) on January 10th, staring Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers (Spine #1167 – Blu-ray and DVD). You’ll get a new 4K digital restoration, along with new interviews with author Miriam J. Petty and Imogen Sara Smith, and the trailer. [Read on here...]
