Doogan’s Queue for May 6, 2014

It’s May! Hooray! That means the start-up of a bountiful run of movies on home media. This month is seeing a lot of catalog re-releases and that’s what we’ll be looking at this week. Only a few new release titles with a whole bunch of remastered goodness filling up the back-end. And away we go!

In Memory of Mickey Rooney

Even with all the plaudits and platitudes, not enough was written upon the passing of Mickey Rooney. I don’t know, actually, if there could ever be enough.

Lord Laurence Olivier once called Mickey Rooney “the greatest actor of them all,” and Marlon Brando said he was “the best actor in films.” [Read on here…]

An Honor To Be Nominated: Barry Lyndon

If it can be difficult to remember who won the Academy Award for Best Picture, it’s downright mindbending trying to remember everything else it was up against. Okay, we’ve got a couple things for you today, but the overall update is going to a quick one today. My wife was in a car accident yesterday – she’s okay, but our car was rear-ended and sustained some pretty good damage, so real life calls today with significant demands on my time.

Meanwhile, though, the good Dr. Jahnke has turned in his weekly Burnt Offerings: MOD DVD column for this week with some good news about a great new catalog Blu-ray release from The Warner Archive, as well as additional DVD product from Warner Archive and the 20th Century Fox Cinema Archives.
