Universal sets 40-Year-Old Virgin, Casper & Meet the Parents for 4K, plus Severin’s Quatermass Xperiment, Daybreakers & Jacob’s Ladder from Lionsgate & more!

We have more announcement news for you today, and more new disc reviews as well…

First, Tim has turned in his thoughts on Jim Isaac’s Jason X (2001) in 4K Ultra HD from New Line via Arrow Video, as well as the Warner Archive Collection’s excellent new Looney Tunes: Collector’s Vault – Volume 1 on Blu-ray!

I’ve posted a new review (with longtime Bits contributor Todd Doogan) of Akira Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood (1957) in 4K Ultra HD from the BFI.

And Stephen has delivered his thoughts on Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s Abigail (2024) in 4K Ultra HD once again, but this time as released by Turbine Media in Germany.

In announcement news today, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has set Brad Silberling’s Casper (1995), Judd Apatow’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton (2015), and Jay Roach’s Meet the Parents (2000) for 4K Ultra HD release on 8/12.

Universal (for DreamWorks) has also set Dean DeBlois’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon (2025) for pre-order on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and 4K Steelbook. The street date is still TBA.

Also available for pre-order on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD from Universal (for Focus Features) is Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme (2025).

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has revealed that Dennis Dugan’s Happy Gilmore (1996) is coming to 4K on 8/19.

IFC Films has set Cameron and Colin Cairnes’ Late Night with the Devil (2025) for Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release on 8/5.

Umbrella Entertainment has set the Michael Haneke Collection (1976-2012) for Blu-ray release on 7/9. It will include the films Three Paths to the Lake (1976), Lemmings Part 1 & Part 2 (1979), Seventh Continent (1989), Benny’s Video (1992), The Rebellion (1993), 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance (1994), The Castle (1997), Funny Games (1997), Code Unknown (2000), The Piano Teacher (2001), Time of the Wolf (2003), Hidden (2005), The White Ribbon (2009), and Amour (2012).

Shout! and Scream Factory are re-releasing John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars (2001) and Prince of Darkness (1987) in 4K Steelbook format on 8/12. They also have André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023) coming on 4K Steelbook on 7/22.

Troma has set Lloyd Kaufman’s #Shakespeares Shitstorm (2020) for 4K Ultra HD release on 9/16.

Hammer Films has set Val Guest’s The Quatermass Xperiment (1955) and Quatermass 2 (1954) for 4K Ultra HD release on 6/20.

Severin Films has announced the Blu-ray release of a High Tension: Four Films by Lamberto Bava box set on 8/26, including The Prince of Terror (1988), The Man Who Wouldn’t Die (1989), School of Fear (1989), and Eye Witness (1989).

Fans of the John Wick films will be pleased to know that Lionsgate is already taking pre-orders for Len Wiseman’s Ballerina: From the World of John Wick (2025) on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and 4K Steelbook. Once again, the street date is still TBA.

And finally, our friends at Lionsgate Limited have begun teasing their next set of 4K Steelbook releases for August, which will include Michael and Peter Spierig’s Daybreakers (2009) and Adrian Lyne’s Jacob’s Ladder (1990).
