Also today, Doogan has delivered his usual Doogan’s Queue rundown of this week’s arrivals on Blu-ray and DVD on Amazon and on the shelves of your local video store (if any of those still exist). Do check it out.
Finally, our own Russell Hammond has posted the weekly Release Dates & Artwork section update with all the latest Blu-ray and DVD cover artwork, as well as Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, when you order anything at all (not just movie discs) from Amazon in the same session after clicking to them though our links, a small portion of that goes to help support our work here at The Bits and we really do appreciate it.
Now then... there isn’t a great deal of release news today, but there is this: Universal has set Jarhead 2: Field of Fire for BD and DVD release on 8/19.
Finally today, a bit of bad news: The legendary Swiss surrealist and production designer H.R. Giger has died. Best known for his creature work on Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), his “biomechanical” artistic style appeared in or influenced many films thereafter. Giger was also instrumental in Alejandro Jodorowsky aborted attempt to bring Frank Herbert’s Dune to the big screen. The man was almost singlehandedly responsible for every nightmare I had between 1979 and 1986, and I surely do thank him for it. Giger was 74. More here at ars technica.
All right, we’ll leave you today with a look at the BD cover artwork for a bunch of titles now available for pre-order on Amazon.com, including HBO’s Boardwalk Empire: Season Four (due 8/19), Mill Creek’s reissues of Flatliners and Donnie Brasco (7/22), the anime Appleseed: Alpha (7/22) from Sony, the BBC’s Orphan Black: Season Two (7/15), Le Week-End (7/8), Grindhouse Releasing’s Cannibal Holocaust (7/1) and the final art for both versions of Warner’s 300: Rise of an Empire (6/24)...
Stay tuned...
