This is a day I’ve been waiting for a very long time for.

A couple of weeks ago, I learned from a good friend (a fellow home video industry veteran) that one of my favorite films had recently received a new 4K scan of the original camera negative and a full digital remastering.

This was something I’d heard previously was likely to happen this year, but this chat was the confirmation that not only was the news true, the work was essentially already done.

Suffice it to say, it made be very happy.

But I wasn’t sure if the studio in question had any actual release plans for the film, either on 4K disc or Digital.

So naturally, I started asking around about it with additional sources.

And yesterday morning, I learned that this film is indeed getting a physical 4K release.

It’s happening very soon.

And now I’m REALLY happy.

The studio in question is Disney. And the film I’m referring to is none other than… [Read on here...]

Tombstone (1993)

Yes, indeed… George P. Cosmatos and Kevin Jarre’s Tombstone is finally coming to physical 4K Ultra HD on 4/22!

It’ll come in 2-disc Steelbook packaging with the film in 4K, as well as a Blu-ray disc, and a Digital code.

The 4K disc will feature Dolby Vision HDR, with audio in English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio format, and it should be noted that this is the 130-minute Theatrical Cut, not the slightly longer (135-minute) Vista Series Director’s Cut.

There are no new extras for this release, but the Blu-ray in the package will be the same disc released in 2010 which contains some legacy features. (So you may wish to keep the original Vista Series DVD, if you still have it, which contains the longer cut and additional features.)

As longtime Bits readers will know, this film is a huge favorite of mine. And back in January of last year… not long before we first broke the exclusive news of the new Sony/Disney distribution deal here at The Digital Bits… I was invited by Disney reps to submit a list of films that I thought the studio should consider for release on physical 4K UHD.

I compiled a list of fifty titles, an A-list of twenty-five, and a B-list of twenty-five more.

Tombstone was at the very top of that A-list.

So I am thrilled beyond measure to reveal here for the very first time that it’s officially coming to 4K disc in April—less than a month from now.

My thanks to everyone involved at Disney and Sony for making this release happen!

Watch for the official studio announcement to happen in the next few days and we’ll be sure to post all the details here on the site as soon as it drops.

In the meantime, I am most definitely your huckleberry.
