Deadwood: A Lie Agreed Upon, Ernest & Celestine, Flying Tigers, new Police documentary & more!

All right, we’ve got just a couple things for you today, but there’s some interest here...

First up, Dr. Jahnke’s posted his weekly Burnt Offerings column, looking at this week’s new MOD DVD and Blu-ray releases from Warner Archive, including Arthur Hiller’s The Americanization of Emily. Don’t miss it!

Also today, are (or were) any of you fans of HBO’s Deadwood? To celebrate the show’s 10th anniversary, Roger Ebert.com has created a 26-minute video essay looking back at the series, narrated by actor Jim Beaver. It’s called A Lie Agreed Upon and it’s pretty damn great – check it out here on Vimeo. If, after watching, you can refrain from quickly going back and watching an episode or two, you sir are an oak. David Milch created a gem with this series and we sure do miss it.  [Read on here...]

Some announcement news today...

The BBC has set Ripper Street: Season Two for Blu-ray and DVD release on 4/15 (SRP $34.98 and $29.98). Extras include the Beneath Ripper Street documentary. Season Three begins filming in May.

New Video Group will release the animated Ernest & Celestine on Blu-ray/DVD Combo on 6/10 (SRP $34.95).

Anchor Bay has set Law Abiding Citizen, The Evil Dead, The Lords of Salem, Killing Them Softly, and Lawless for Steelbook-packaged Blu-ray release on 5/20. Anchor Bay has also set Magic City: The Complete Series on Blu-ray on 5/13.

Oliver Films has set the John Wayne classic Flying Tigers (1942) for Blu-ray release on 5/13, along with Home of the Brave (1949). Look also for Love Happy (1949) and Johnny Come Lately (1943) on 5/6.

And here’s something interesting for you fans of The Police: Andy Summers has produced a documentary on the history of the band and its recent reunion tour. It’s called Can’t Stand Losing You: Surviving The Police and Entertainment One is distributing it. There’s already a Japanese Blu-ray and DVD release planned for 5/27 (which can be import pre-ordered at this link). I’m already checking with eOne to see if there are plans to release a more affordable version on disc here in the States. I’ll be sure to let you know when I hear back. Meanwhile, here’s the trailer.
