Gone Girl BD review, plus Gravity: Luxe, Extraterrestrial, Game of Thrones, Twilight Time upcoming & more

We’re kicking things off today with a new Blu-ray review, featuring yours truly with some thoughts on David Fincher’s Gone Girl, now available on Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox. It’s an interesting film, a bit of an odd duck for the director but still worth your time. In release news today, Warner Home Video has made their forthcoming Gravity: Two Disc Diamond Luxe Special Edition Blu-ray release official for 3/31. SRP is $24.98. All of the existing Blu-ray special features will be included, along with three new items: The Gravity: Silent Space version of the film with an introduction by director Alfonso Cuaron, the new Looking to the Stars: The Evolution of Space documentary, and video of Sandra Bullock’s on-set birthday wishes to Cuaron.

Meanwhile, Scream Factory has set the Vicious Brothers’ Extraterrestrial for Blu-ray and DVD release on 5/12, including audio commentary with the Vicious Brothers and actors Brittany Allen and Melanie Papalia, deleted scenes, The Making of Extraterrestrial featurette, and a theatrical trailer.

Paramount has just set a Mahogany: The Couture Edition for DVD only release on 5/5, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the film, which stars Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams.

Also today, our friends at Twilight Time have offered up a sneak peek at some of their planned Blu-ray releases for the first half of 2015, and there are some real gems in the mix. Among them are: The Bounty (1984), Solomon and Sheba (1959), First Men in the Moon (1964 – 5,000 units), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959 – 4K restoration, 5,000 units), and U-Turn (1997) on 3/10, Zardoz (1974) in March or April (TBA), The Story of Adele H. (1975), The Fantasticks (1995), April Love (1957), The Remains of the Day (1993), and Richard III (1995) on 4/14, A Man for All Seasons (1966), Mississippi Burning (1988), American Buffalo (1996), Hombre (1967), and Carla's Song (1996) on 5/12, and Absolute Beginners (1986), State of Grace (1990), Mississippi Mermaid (1969), The Young Lions (1958), and The Night of the Generals (1967) on 6/9. Unless otherwise noted, all are limited to 3,000 units each.

Also today, Lionsgate has set three DVD only titles for release in April, including Bark Ranger and The End of the Civil War on 4/14, and Wingman Inc. on 4/21.

And TV Shows on DVD is reporting that Timeless Media is getting ready to release The Saint: The Complete Series on DVD on 5/26 (SRP $199.98). This of course is the classic Roger Moore series.

In other news today, when HBO’s Game of Thrones: The Complete Fourth Season streets on Blu-ray and DVD next week (on 2/17), it looks as if Walmart, Best Buy, and Target will all have retail-exclusive packaging, swag, and bonus disc content. We don’t yet know what will be on the bonus discs, but you can expect different exclusive featurettes on each version. Check your local stores for details.

Speaking of Game of Thrones, HBO has posted a behind-the-scenes teaser of the upcoming fifth season on YouTube. You can view it here [very mild spoilers apply]…

Finally today, for you Star Wars fans, the Slightly Warped Website has posted detailed and close-up pictures of many of the spaceship miniatures used in making the original trilogy. If you love old-school model work like we do, it’s worth a look.
