Now then… Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has finally dropped their press release for the 4K Ultra HD release of the Wachowski’s Speed Racer (2008) on 5/19—a title we first revealed here at The Bits way back on New Year’s Eve (click here for that)!
As expected, the title will include Dolby Vision HDR and a new object based and lossless Dolby Atmos mix. All of the legacy Blu-ray features will carry over on the actual 4K disc—including content that was previously retail exclusive or released only on international SKUs—and there will be one new feature as well: A retrospective featurette featuring the Wachowskis looking back at the film called Fast / Future / Family: Speed Racer Revisited. And WB is returning the remastered film to 225 theaters around the US as well during the week of April 25!
I’ve been advocating for this film since I was first invited to a studio screening of it on the Warner Bros. lot way back in 2008, and it’s one of my Holy Grail titles on 4K Ultra HD—also something I’ve been pushing for with the studio. It’s as groundbreaking in its way as The Matrix (1999) and it advances cinematography, editing, and the language of visual storytelling in the cinema in ways that films like Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) would embrace years later. So today, I’m very happy indeed.
But that’s not all this afternoon—Paramount has just set Kevin Williamson’s Scream 7 (2026) for Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and 4K Steelbook release on 6/16, complete with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. There’s also an Amazon-exclusive 4K + Blu-ray package that includes a Handmade by Robots vinyl figure of Ghost Face. Extras will include a trio of featurettes (Scar Tissue: The Making of Scream 7, Building Tension: Production Design, Dance of Death: Stunts), Ice Nine Kills’ Twisting the Knife music video, and 6 deleted scenes.
Paramount (via Alliance Home Entertainment) is also releasing Johannes Roberts’ Primate (2025) on Blu-ray and DVD on 4/21, followed by Matthew Vaughn’s Stardust (2007) in 4K Ultra HD and Robert Altman’s Nashville (1975) on Blu-ray on 4/28.
Shout! Studios has just revealed a bunch of great 4K Ultra HD catalog titles (on the Studio Distribution Services’ Gruv retail website) for release in June, most of which are now available for pre-order on Gruv and Amazon. They include Brian Levant’s The Flintstones (1994) 4K “Stonebook” and Don Coscarelli’s Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) 4K Steelbook on 6/2, Frank Oz’s Bowfinger (1999), Joe Dante’s The ‘Burbs (1989), and a wide release (non-Steelbook) version of Arcane: League of Legends – Season Two (2021) 4K (for GKids) on 6/9, Gordon Douglas’ Them! (1954), George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead: Collector’s Edition (1985), Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue (1997) 4K Steelbook (for GKids), Mamoru Hosoda’s The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) 4K Steelbook (for GKids), and the Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas (2012) 4K Steelbook on 6/16, James Gunn’s Slither (2006) 4K Steelbook, Joe Carnahan’s The Grey (2011), and Vincent Ward’s What Dreams May Come (1998) on 6/23, and Richard Benjamin’s The Money Pit: 40th Anniversary Edition (1986) and the Deathstalker Triple Feature 4K Steelbook (includes the 1983, 1987, and 2025 films) on 6/30. Most of those are new releases, while some are re-issues in new packaging.
Here’s a look at the packaging and contents for Day the Dead…
Day of the Dead is newly remastered in 4K from the interpositive and features Dolby Vision HDR and a new Dolby Atmos mix, along with the previous 5.1 surround and 2.0 mono mixes; an isolated music and effects track; a new audio commentary (with author Daniel Kraus and film critic Drew McWeeny); the previous commentary with the director, cast and crew; 7 new interviews (with Lori Cardille, Greg Nicotero, John Harrison, Suzanne Romero, John Amplas, Ernest Dickerson, and Tina Romero); a pair of new featurettes (Monster Mania: Restoring Day of the Dead and Stick of the Dead); and legacy special features as well.
And Eureka! has set Richard Attenborough’s directorial debut, Oh! What a Lovely War (1969) for release as a limited edition Masters of Cinema Blu-ray on June 29 in the UK.
In other news, Warner Bros. has shared a clip from their new 4K remaster of Speed Racer, and you can see that below. It looks pretty great for a 2K upsample, and I can’t wait to see the HDR grade (with production deep color) and listen to the new Atmos mix. It’ll also be nice to see the film not compressed to hell on a BD-25 disc, like the Blu-ray was. Here’s the clip…
And finally today, our old friends at The Screening Room AV (in Colorado Springs, CO) would like you to know that they’re offering anyone looking to buy a JVC projector a last chance to get one before prices increase on April 1. They have sale prices on right now for the NZ500, NZ800, and NZ900 that last until Midnight on March 31. Manufacturing costs are reportedly increasing, so it’s unlikely that deals this good will be available again. The Screening Room also has great deals on B-stock JVC projectors at great prices. When I needed a new 4K projector, the Screening Room hooked me up with a great DLA-NP5 and all the support I could ask for. So if you need a projector yourself, I can’t recommend them more highly—just ask for John Schuermann and tell him Bill from The Bits sent you!
You can find more here on their website, and here’s the official details:
