Flesh for Frankenstein 4K reviewed, plus new Ghostbusters: Afterlife & Collection details, and Godfather Trilogy, Constantine & Edge of Tomorrow are coming in UHD!

Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection (4K Ultra HD)

We’re taking it a little easy here at The Bits this week, especially in this stretch between the holidays, so that our whole team can relax, unwind, and focus on family and whatnot. But we do have a good post today with release news, a new disc review, and a bit of a look ahead at a few new 4K UHD catalog titles that we expect to arrive sometime in the new year. As always, let’s start with the review first...

Stephen has given Paul Morrissey’s Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) an in-depth review in 4K Ultra HD from Vinegar Syndrome. The disc includes both 4K, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray 3D in both polarized and anaglyph form (thanks to a restoration via the 3-D Film Archive). Sounds like it’s a nice set, but there’s a problem with the 4K disc in the package that’s being corrected (replacement discs will be issued in January sometime). The disc will be available for sale again on the company’s website early next year.

Now then, the big news we have is that Sony has finally officially announced both Ghostbusters: Afterlife for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/1, as well as the Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection 4K UHD/Blu-ray box set (including Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, and Ghostbusters Afterlife) that same day. Note that the Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection will also include Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters: Answer the Call in 4K Digital, along with 4K Digital versions of the other films as well. All of these 4K UHD discs will include Dolby Atmos audio and both Dolby Vision and HDR10 high dynamic range. [Read on here...]

Special features on Afterlife will include a deleted scene (Is It Ever Too Late?) and 7 featurettes (We Got One! Easter Eggs Revealed, Ghostbusters: A Look Back, A Look Ahead, Bringing Ecto-1 Back to Life, The Gearhead’s Guide to Ghostbusters Gadgets, Special Effects: The Ghosts of Afterlife, and Summoning the Spirit: Making Ghostbusters: Afterlife).

Meanwhile, the Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection will include no less than two Blu-ray bonus discs that feature all of the previous Blu-ray extras along with the following new content for the original Ghostbusters:

  • Rare 114-minute Preview Cut of the Film (in Standard Definition) – an unearthed early cut of the film with alternate takes, additional scenes, early effects and more, with optional commentary by associate producer Joe Medjuck and editor Sheldon Kahn
  • “Reitman Squared” Scene Commentary – a look at two scenes from the film with Ivan & Jason Reitman
  • Dana’s Lost Auditions – eight auditions for the role of Dana Barrett, featuring Denise Crosby, Kelly LeBrock and more!
  • “Ghostbusters: Behind Closed Doors” Documentary – a 90-minute documentary about the making of Ghostbusters and the history of the franchise!
  • Ghostbusters Dailies – over an hour of raw dailies, encompassing 7 scenes from the film
  • Full TV Broadcast Version of the Film (in Standard Definition) – featuring alternate TV-safe takes

You’ll also get the following new content for Ghostbusters II (along with the previous extras):

  • “Reitman Squared” Scene Commentary – a look at two scenes from the film with Ivan & Jason Reitman
  • 19 Deleted Scenes – a collection of never-before-seen deleted scenes!
  • Ghostbusters II Soundtrack Promo – a scene from the film with commentary from composer Randy Edelman
  • Full TV Broadcast Version of the Film (in Standard Definition) – featuring alternate TV-safe takes

Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection (4K Ultra HD)

Now then, I promised you a bit of new 4K Ultra HD catalog news...

Retail sources are suggesting that Paramount’s long-anticipated The Godfather Trilogy will arrive on 4K UHD on 3/22.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has revealed that Norman Jewison’s In the Heat of the Night (1967) will arrive on 4K UHD sometime early in 2022. It’s listed as “coming soon.”

Anime Limited in the UK is releasing Eiichi Yamamoto’s legendary Japanese anime Belladonna of Sadness (1973) in 4K Ultra HD on 2/7.

And here’s something interesting that we’ve just uncovered here at The Bits: Our industry sources are telling us to expect Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to release Constantine (2005) and Edge of Tomorrow (2014) on 4K Ultra HD in 2022. This is in addition to the catalog titles we’ve already uncovered (and mentioned) previously that are coming next year from the studio, including The Green Mile (due on 2/22), The Lost Boys, Singin’ in the Rain, Poltergeist, and Casablanca.
