We have three more new Blu-ray reviews for you to enjoy today, starting with Stephen’s take on Daisuke Miyazaki’s Videophobia (2019) from Vinegar Syndrome.

Dennis has turned in his thoughts on Ulu Grosbard’s Straight Time (1978) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

And Dennis has also reviewed Patricia Birch’s Grease 2: 40th Anniversary Edition in the form of a new Blu-ray Steelbook from Paramount.

In announcement news today, Paramount has finally made their 8/9 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release of Event Horizon (1997) official. The title will include both Dolby Vision and HDR10 high dynamic range, 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio, and the following extras: Commentary by director Paul W.S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt, the 5-part The Making of Event Horizon documentary, The Point of No Return featurette with director commentary, The Unseen Event Horizon featurette, Secrets (deleted and extended scenes with director’s commentary), the theatrical trailer, and a video trailer. We’ve got four more disc reviews for you all to enjoy today, including three new 4K Ultra HD titles...

Tim has turned in his look at Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys in 4K UHD from Arrow Video, a fine upgrade of their previous Blu-ray edition (but one that’s going to require a disc replacement program—the details are in the review).

Stephen has offered his thoughts on Michael Winner’s Death Wish II (1982) as well as Bill Hunzman’s FleshEater (1988), both in 4K Ultra HD from Vinegar Syndrome.

And Dennis has a look at Alfred Hitchcock’s Stage Fright (1950), as recently released on Blu-ray by our friends at The Warner Archive Collection.

We’re starting things off today with Tim’s review of Lewis Teague’s Alligator (1980) in 4K Ultra HD from Scream Factory. It sounds like this is not only the best the film has ever looked and sounded, but it’s also one of Shout! and Scream’s best 4K releases to date. So do give it a look if you might be interested.

We’ve got some interesting odds and ends to share news-wise here at The Bits today, as well as another big disc review, and some sad news unfortunately. But first, the review...

Tim has just delivered his in-depth look at Sony’s new Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray box set, which includes new 4K editions of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II—now with Dolby Vision HDR—as well as Ghostbusters: Afterlife on disc, and Ghostbusters: Answer the Call on Digital only (though the code redeems for both versions of that film in 4K). Plus the set include no less than two Blu-ray bonus discs with a ton of legacy extras, as well as new material exclusive to this set. And you get a mini replica of Don Shay’s Making Ghostbusters book from 1985.

Unfortunately, the set is a limited edition release from Sony and it’s sold out almost everywhere. (At last check, you could still get it from a few international retailers, but that version may have region issues and will not come with Digital codes.) We have asked the studio whether it might be released in a second printing, or perhaps in a discs-only configuration at some point in the future, and have been told that while it’s possible there’s no news to report at this time. Should that change, we will of course post an update here on The Bits.

In the meantime, we’ve gotten reports from a number of readers that their sets were damaged in shipment, or that the box they received had the wrong discs resulting from a packaging error (for example, they may have gave gotten two copies of Ghostbusters in BD and 4K, but no copies of Ghostbusters II). If that applies to you, Sony has provided us with a customer service email address for you to use to get things sorted. [Read on here...]

First things first today: The Criterion Collection has just announced their April Blu-ray and 4K release slate and—as always—it’s another great list of titles.

Look for Alex Cox’s Walker (Spine #423 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/12, Vittorio De Sica’s Miracle in Milan (Spine #1119 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Frank Tashlin’s The Girl Can’t Help It (Spine #1120 – Blu-ray only) on 4/19, and Arie and Chuko Esiri’s Eyimofe (This Is My Desire) (Spine #1121 – Blu-ray and DVD), Bertrand Tavernier’s ‘Round Midnight (Spine #1122 – Blu-ray and DVD), and Al Reinert’s For All Mankind (Spine #54 – 4K Ultra HD – Blu-ray and DVD already available) on 4/26. You can see the 4K art for For All Mankind on the left, and we’ll post the rest of the cover artwork over the next few days as the titles become available for pre-order on Amazon.

Here’s some more great breaking news: Our friends at Powerhouse Films have just informed us that their outstanding Indicator label—which already delivers fantastic special edition Blu-ray titles to the UK and European market—is officially coming to the US!

The company has partnered with Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance Entertainment, to ensure that retailers throughout North America will be able to carry Indicator releases. These will include Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Sunrise, Critics Choice, and DiabolikDVD. The first Indicator titles should start becoming available here in the US starting this week. [Read on here...]

We’re closing out the week today here at The Bits with a bit of announcement news, word of a few 4K title delays, and more new disc reviews.

First up, Tim has turned in reviews of Stephen King’s Children of the Corn (1984), directed by Fritz Kiersch and newly released on 4K Ultra HD by Arrow Video, as well as Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds which is new on 4K Ultra HD from Universal.

Also, Stephen has reviewed Nick Murphy’s The Awakening (2011) on Blu-ray from the Cohen Media Group, along with Nadia Tass’ Malcolm (1986) on Blu-ray from Umbrella Entertainment.

Now then, the big announcement news today is that Criterion has just revealed their January 2022 release slate, which is set to include Thomas Vinterberg’s The Celebration (Spine #1108 – Blu-ray) on 1/11, Garrett Bradley’s Time (Spine #1109 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Richard Lester’s A Hard Day’s Night (Spine #711 – Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K) on 1/18, and Kirsten Johnson’s Dick Johnson Is Dead (Spine #111 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Jane Campion’s The Piano (Spine #1110 – Blu-ray and 4K) on 1/25. We start today with three more new disc reviews.

First up is my look at Random Space Media’s recent Breaking Bad: The Complete Series Blu-ray box set, an all region release that includes the Netflix streaming sequel El Camino. Note that this set is currently selling for the same price on Amazon as Sony’s wide-release Blu-ray set that does not include the sequel film.

Also today, Tim has posted his thoughts on Roland Klick’s Deadlock (1970), a fascinating film newly released in 4K by Subkultur Entertainment via Vinegar Syndrome.

And Stephen has turned in a new 4K review as well, this one of Stephanie Rothman’s Terminal Island (1972) on Ultra HD, also from Vinegar Syndrome.

Now then, in announcement news today, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has made their Mad Max Anthology official for release on 4K Ultra HD and Digital on 11/2, just as we’ve been expecting for weeks now. [Read on here...]

We’re closing out the week here at The Digital Bits today with another new disc review and a little bit more release news as well...

First up, I’ve given M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable (2000) a look in 4K Ultra HD from Disney. This was an early Vista Series DVD title that eventually found its way to Blu-ray in 2008. But the good news is that not only has the film gotten a terrific 4K remaster for UHD, the Blu-ray in the package is remastered as well. And both are a major improvement over any previous release. I think fans of the film will be pleased with this one.

Now then... in announcement news today, our friends at Arrow Video have just revealed their December release slate, which includes the previously announced Shawscope: Volume One Blu-ray box set along with My Stepmother Is an Alien on Blu-ray in the US, UK, and Canada, as well as The Last Matinee and the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Collection: Volume II (includes Fear Eats the Soul, Effi Briest, Fox and His Friends & Chinese Roulette, and The Marriage of Maria Braun) on Blu-ray in the UK only, and the Giallo Essentials Collection (includes What Have They Done to Your Daughters?, Torso, and Strip Nude for Your Killer) on Blu-ray in the US and Canada only. The street date for all seems to be 12/7, save for Shawscope: Volume One and My Stepmother Is an Alien, which appear to be due on or about 12/14. I’ve posted my thoughts on Marvel’s Black Widow in 4K Ultra HD, directed by Cate Shortland. And surprise, the film is finally available to order from Amazon.com, so there’s that.

Also today, Tim has reviewed Michael Chaves’ The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It in 4K UHD from Warner Bros. Note that the studio is now calling it The Conjuring 3 just to avoid confusion.

And finally, Dennis has turned in his two cents on George Stevens’ A Place in the Sun (1951) as newly-released on Blu-ray as part of the Paramount Presents line-up.

We’ve got more great new disc reviews for you to enjoy today, as well as more release news too...

First up, Tim has posted his thoughts on Richard Alan Greenberg’s Little Monsters (1989), coming on 9/15 to Blu-ray from Lionsgate via their Vestron Video Collector’s Series.

Tim has also given William Witney’s Master of the World (1961) a look on Blu-ray, a hybrid adaptation of a pair of classic Jules Vern novels (Robur the Conqueror and Master of the World). That arrives on Blu-ray on 8/31 from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And finally, Tim has taken Roger Corman’s The Raven (1963) out for a spin on Blu-ray, starring Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Boris Karloff. That’s also coming from Kino Lorber Studio Classics on 8/31.

In terms of announcement news today, the big one is that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially revealed a title we’ve had on our 4K List here at The Bits for a while now: J. Lee Thompson’s The Guns of Navarone. Look for it to arrive on 4K Ultra HD on 10/12 in honor of the film’s 60th anniversary. [Read on here...]
