Okay, just a couple quick things for you guys today as I’m fighting off a wicked cold recently visited upon our household by travelers from Iowa. LOL.

Our own Jeff Kleist has turned in a review of Ender’s Game on Blu-ray from Summit Entertainment & Lionsgate.

And in announcement news today, Scream Factory has set David Cholewa’s “international apocalyptic sci-fi film” Dead Shadows for Blu-ray and DVD release in the States on 4/29. Extras will include a special effects featurette, delete scenes, an interview with the director, and the film’s teaser and theatrical trailers.

Entertainment One has set Monsters: The Complete Series for 9-disc DVD release on 3/18. This is the 3-season/72-episode series that ran on the Sci-Fi Channel in the 1990s.

And CBS and Paramount have set Californiacation: The Sixth Season for DVD only release on 3/25.

That’s it! Have a great weekend and we’ll see you back here on Monday. Peace out...

Ender’s Game: The Magic of Digital Domain

They cut your head off and it’s all that remains.

After spending an afternoon at Digital Domain for The Digital Bits, I discovered the wizards behind Ender’s Game kept only the face of the actors during many of the scenes in the movie.

Everything else is CGI and looks surprisingly good.  [Read on here…]

Big release news today: Warner Home Video has just officially announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on 4/8. There’s a Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack (SRP $35.99), a Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack (SRP $44.95) and a rental DVD version (priced at $22.97). This is of course the theatrical version of the film. There’s no word yet on the forthcoming BD and BD3D release of the Extended Edition of the film, but if the past is any predictor (and it usually is) look for those to street on either 11/4 or 11/11. Meanwhile, you’ll find the cover artwork below.  [Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got a bunch of interesting studio and indie release announcements today, including some new titles, catalog titles, TV stuff and more.

First though, our own Dr. Adam Jahnke has turned in a new Jahnke’s Electric Theatre column today, featuring the latest installment of An Honor to Be Nominated. This time, Adam looks back at Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, Part III. Enjoy!

Now then... announcement news... 20th Century Fox is releasing the indie music hit Once on Blu-ray on 4/1 (SRP $19.99) but only as an Amazon.com exclusive. Following on BD on 4/29, also as an Amazon exclusive, is Notes on a Scandal (SRP $19.99), which stars Cate Blanchette, Judi Dench and Bill Nighy. You can see the cover artwork for both titles below. Fox will also widely release an Ice Age 4-movie BD set on 4/1 (SRP $49.99), as well as The King of Comedy: 30th Anniversary Edition on 3/25. [Read on here...]

First things first today: Our own Michael Coate has turned in a new History, Legacy & Showmanship column in which he looks back at the original roadshow release of Sweet Charity, which celebrates its 45th anniversary today. The piece includes a great and lengthy roundtable interview with a trio of leading experts on the film’s history, so don’t miss it. Enjoy!

In other news today, Disney has revealed that Thor: The Dark World (which streets on 2/25) is not going to be available in BD/DVD Combo versions as originally announced, but rather a Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray Combo, and single-disc Blu-ray and DVD editions, all with digital copy. This appears to be part of a broader shift by the studio away from BD/DVD Combos. Members of the Disney Movie Club who had pre-ordered the announced BD3D/BD/DVD Combo have had their orders shifted to the BD3D/BD version. And as you can see from the art below, the versions available for pre-order on Amazon have changed too.  [Read on here...]
