Blu-ray News – Mad Max: Fury Road, Disney Animation Short Films, The Knick, Get Hard, Gillette’s Sherlock Holmes & more!

All right, before we begin today... I had the chance to see George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road last night in IMAX laser 3D at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. So now I can officially say that I HAVE seen everything. Holy crap. The film is marvelously inventive, ferociously kinetic, exquisitely detailed, cinematic insanity. That’s my Mad Max: Fury Road review for you in a nutshell. Trust me, you just need to see it. It’s well worth your time. And you’ve never seen anything remotely like it. I think it would be fair to say that George Miller just schooled Michael Bay and a lot of other younger filmmakers on the action film genre.

First up today, something surprising: A Blu-ray title called the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection has just gone up for pre-order on Amazon on 8/18. We’ve no idea what’s in it, but we’re definitely looking into it.

Next, HBO Studios and Cinemax have set The Knick: The Complete First Season for Blu-ray and DVD release on 8/11.

Here’s something brilliant: Flicker Alley is getting ready to release William Gillette’s newly re-discovered and restored Sherlock Holmes (1916) film on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/20 (SRP $39.95). Extras will include Sherlock Holmes Baffled (1900), A Canine Sherlock (1912), Più forte che Sherlock Holmes (1913), HD transfers from the Fox Movietone Collection (including an interview with author Conan Doyle and outtakes from a 1930 broadcast with William Gillette showing off his amateur railroad), a PDF manuscript of the 1899 Sherlock Holmes play by William Gillette, a PDF of the original contract between William Gillette and the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company, and a booklet featuring images from the film and information about the restoration project.

Warner Home Video will release the comedy Get Hard on Blu-ray and DVD on 6/30, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart.

Arrow Video has just set Blood Rage for 2-disc Special Edition release on Blu-ray on 8/25. They also have Robert Hossein’s Cemetery Without Crosses due on Blu-ray on 7/21.

Alchemy Video will release T.J. Amato’s Brother’s Keeper and Sophie Barthes’ Madame Bovary for Blu-ray release on 8/4.

Cinelicious Pics will release Gangs of Wasseypur on Blu-ray and DVD on 7/14.

We have the official cover artwork for Lionsgate’s Ex Machina below, and the studio has also set Maggie – starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin – for Blu-ray and DVD release on 7/7.

And Universal and Focus Films will release 5 Flights Up on Blu-ray and DVD on 7/7, starring Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton.
