All right, we’ve got just a couple things for you today to close out the week...

First up, our own Tim Salmons closes out his week of Pick-Ups disc reviews with a look at John Carpenter’s Village of the Damned: Collector’s Edition, now available on Blu-ray from our friends over at Scream Factory. Do give it a look.  [Read on here…]

Now then… in news today, Amazon.ca has now posted a 6/7 street date for The Martian: Extended Edition on Blu-ray Disc, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray formats. We know for sure this title is coming, but that June date may be premature. Also, it’s not yet certain there will be a 4K release. We’re checking with our studio sources and we’ll let you know as soon as we do.

Film Movement has set the Academy Award-nominated film Theeb for Blu-ray and DVD release on 5/17. Also coming from the company on DVD only is Glassland (street date 5/3).

Meanwhile, the Cohen Film Collection has set a trio of new Blu-ray titles for release in May, including The Films of Maurice Pialat (includes The Mouth Agape, Graduate First, and Loulou) on 5/17, Jean-Luc Godard’s A Married Woman on 5/24, and Federico Fellini’s City of Women on 5/31.

Also, IFC Films has set A Perfect Day for Blu-ray and DVD release on 5/17.

And Virgil Films will release I Know a Woman Like That on DVD and digital HD on 5/10.

In other news today, the UHD Alliance has announced a new certification program that will allow new UHD BD players to be certified Ultra HD Premium. You can read more on that here at Home Media.

And if you guys are into 4K, there’s word that Major League Baseball and DirecTV have signed a deal to allow the satellite provider to broadcast a number of games in 4K this season. You can read more here.

By the way, speaking of 4K, early next week here at The Bits I expect to post my review of the Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray, and also to offer some thoughts on my experience with the format after the first month. I’d planned on doing this much sooner, but it took so long to get a decent batch of software in hand that I thought it would be worth taking the extra time.

That’s all for now. I wish you all a terrific weekend. See you Monday!
