Cannibal! The Musical has been blown up from the original master tape and manually remastered without AI technology. The new and exclusive Refuse Films high-definition transfer is approved by Cannibal! The Musical’s director of photography, Robert Muratore, and remastered by Mark Brindle of UK post-production company Maniac Films.
In an unabridged exclusive to The Digital Bits, Mark Brindle said on the new transfer, “It has been a labour of love to create a great master from the original interlaced cut of the film. I knew it was shot on film, but as that had been lost, I only had the original digital NTSC interlaced version. I had to get that back to a progressive 24p version for Bluray without losing any original information.”
He adds, “Remastering Cannibal! The Musical was time-consuming. I cut each scene and matched the cadence to remove the extra frame padding added when converted to digital. I then had to track all the scene transitions—wipes and fades—to avoid combing issues at the edges of scenes where the cadence changed.”
Mark further states, “Don't ask us how long the removal of dust, dirt, and noise took! Hint - it was a testament to our dedication and perseverance. Plus all the time spent rotoscoping parts of scenes - especially blood spatter and Trey’s neckerchief and the Chiefs necklace, to fix issues with chroma subsampling - where colours became ‘dotty' as they were upscaled to HD.”
Refuse Films is also excited to announce the launch of its new boutique Blu-ray sub-label, the TromArchive Collection. This label intends to release 50 years of Tromatic excess from Troma’s film archives to the Blu-ray format.
In addition to the world Blu-ray premiere of Trey Parker's Cannibal! The Musical (1993), Series 1 of the TromArchive Collection, features special editions of Troma Team classics The Toxic Avenger (1984) and Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD (1990), both titles directed by Troma co-founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz.
Each TromArchive Collection Blu-ray title is limited to 3,000 units, playable worldwide and features an exclusive slipcover featuring original Tromatic poster art and new sleeve designs by renowned graphic illustrator Mila K.
Venturing across the Atlantic from the UK, Refuse Films has been granted full access to the darkest depths of the Troma basement, unarchiving and preserving alternate cuts, deleted scenes, rare interviews and hours of never-before-seen Tromatic footage.
For an exclusive interview with The Digital Bits, the President of Refuse Films and director of Troma’s latest film, Eating Miss Campbell, further explained that he plans to bring undiscovered cult gems from the Troma library to the Blu-ray format. He mentioned, “I’ve been a fan of Troma movies since I was 11 years old, collecting all the movies on VHS, and later DVD. It’s a dream come true to bring the Troma library to Refuse Films and be able to give the movies a comprehensive boutique edition on the Blu-ray format.”
Pre-order the TromArchive Collection Series 1 from today at www.refusefilms.com and Tromatize your Blu-ray library with comprehensive editions of your favorite Troma Team releases.
