I’m told that the documentary is over 90 minutes in length! You can click here or on the image above to see Lionsgate Limited listing, and once again pre-orders should start on 11/11. The title should also begin to be available for pre-order widely soon on Amazon and other online retailers. You can see the cover art at right here.
Also today, here’s something exciting: Our old friends Robert A. Harris and James Mockoski—each of them film preservation/restoration legends, via their companies The Film Preserve Ltd. and The Maltese Film Works—have let us know that they’re launching a new classic film distribution label called Artcraft Pictures! And as their inaugural project, they’re going to be releasing Herbert Brenon’s Beau Geste (1926) on Blu-ray in a beautiful new 4K restoration on 11/25! The silent B&W adventure, produced by Paramount, stars Ronald Colman and follows a trio of brothers who each enlist in the French Foreign Legion just prior to World War I—and subsequently see action in North Africa—to protect a family secret.
The restored film is now screening in art house theatres around the country. From their press release: “The Library of Congress supervised the restoration in conjunction with The Film Preserve Ltd. and The Maltese FilmWorks LLC. The effort that brought together multiple institutions to achieve this restoration, including MOMA, Paramount Pictures, UCLA Film and Television Archive, the George Eastman Museum, and the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. The 4K restoration was completed at Roundabout Entertainment in Burbank, California. 4K scans by the Library of Congress Film Preservation Laboratory at the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center, Culpeper, Virginia.”
The Blu-ray will present the most complete version of the film seen since its original release nearly a century ago (129 mins), along with a great collection of newly-produced and archival special features that will include:
- Audio Commentary by Historian Frank Thompson
- Beau Geste Radio Play by Orson Welles
- New score compiled by Rodney Sauer and performed by the Mont Alto Orchestra
- Music for Beau Geste
- Gallery of behind-the-scenes and publicity stills
- Collectible booklet featuring liner notes by Frank Thompson
- Gallery of the original program from the premiere of Beau Geste
- Restoration Demonstration
You can pre-order the Blu-ray here at their website. And you can watch the trailer below…
That’s all for now. Back tomorrow with more. Stay tuned!
