In release news today, we’ve learned that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just set Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, and The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending for release on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format on 10/4 (SRP $44.95 each). As you can see, we’ve also posted the updated cover art for Amazon’s Star Trek Beyond 4K Combo exclusive, which includes the film in 4K, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray 3D, plus a replica of the USS Franklin starship from the film.
Speaking of 4K Ultra HD, we’ve also learned that Warner has plans to release Clint Eastwood’s Sully on the format, as well as War Dogs. And you already know that Suicide Squad is up for pre-order in 4K. Other newly listed 4K titles include Universal’s Jason Bourne and Sausage Party from Sony. Street dates for all of these titles are TBA.
In other release news, Shout! Factory has just set T.A.M.I. Show/The Big T.N.T. Show for Blu-ray release on 12/2 as part of their new Shout! Selects line (SRP $29.98). These are terrific vintage concert films featuring some of the great Rock & Roll and R&B acts of the 1960s. Extras will include an interview with T.A.M.I. Show director Steve Binder, new interviews with The Big T.N.T. Show performers Petula Clark, Henry Diltz and John Sebastian, audio commentary Steve Binder, original radio spots, and a 36-page booklet featuring detailed essays by Don Waller and rare photos and memorabilia.
Also, we mentioned it the other day, but Lionsgate has just set Return of the Living Dead 3 and C.H.U.D. II: Bud the CHUD for Blu-ray release on 11/22 as part of their Vestron Video Collector’s Series (SRP $34.97 each). Return of the Living Dead 3 will include audio commentary with director Brian Yuzna, audio commentary with actress Melinda Clarke and special make-up effects artist Tom Rainone, new interviews (with John Penney, Melinda Clarke, J. Trevor Edmond, David Tripet, Chris Roth, Steve Johnson, and Chris Nelson), and a still gallery. C.H.U.D. II will include audio commentary with director David Irving, new interviews (with Gerrit Graham, Tricia Leigh Fisher, and Allan Apone), and a still gallery. Here’s a look at those...
Moving on this afternoon, wanted to take a moment today to promote the great work of one of our own: In case you didn’t know this, our own Jim Hemphill is an accomplished film director and his most recent work, The Trouble with the Truth (which stars Lea Thompson), is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime! I believe it’s free to watch if you’re a Prime member, so do check it out here.
Finally today, we need to take a moment to acknowledge the passing yesterday of director Curtis Hanson. You may know him from such films as The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, The River Wild, and 8 Mile, but it’s for his 1997 classic L.A. Confidential that he’ll be best remembered. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s just a terrific film, and one of the great modern entries in the “neo-noir” genre. Hanson was 71. You can read more here via The New York Times.
