Second Sight details Romero’s Dawn of the Dead in 4K, plus Urban Cowboy & Flashdance BDs & Rad in 4K

Well, last night I finished the Star Wars—all 11 films in 4K. Pretty good, I have to say. I guess the thing I was most surprised by, now that we know it’s a larger narrative—and that some of the films are admittedly better than others—is that it all works together so well. The larger narrative does fit together pretty nicely. Admittedly, the sequel films feel a little more distant from the original trilogy than the prequels do, but visually and tonally they’re actually closer in spirit. Anyway, it’s an interesting experience and one I’m glad I waited for 4K to have. The films have never looked or sounded better, imperfect though some of them are.

While we were focused on Star Wars, our friends at Second Sight in the UK released the specs on their forthcoming Limited Edition of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead in 4K and Blu-ray. Set to street on October 26 in the UK, the box set will weigh in a just over a kilo. Here’s a look at what the package will contain. The 4K disc will be all region obviously, but the Blu-rays will be Region B locked.

Paramount has announced a new Urban Cowboy: 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray for release on 6/2. This will mark the film’s first release on the format. Extras will include a new retrospective featurette, Good Times with Gilley: Looking Back at Urban Cowboy, featuring a new interview with Mickey Gilley, plus multiple deleted scenes.

The studio is also releasing a Friday the 13th: 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray in Steelbook packaging on 5/5. This will include the uncut, unrated version of the film (with digital access to the original theatrical version) plus legacy extras.

Their 4K UHD release of Top Gun (due on 5/19 in regular and Steelbook packaging) will include the new extras The Legacy of Top Gun, On Your Six: Thirty Years of Top Gun, and audio commentary with the filmmakers and naval experts (plus Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio), along with legacy extras.

Paramount’s War of the Worlds 4K (also due 5/19) will include Dolby Vision HDR, Dolby Atmos audio, and the legacy extras.

Meanwhile, their Days of Thunder 4K (also due 5/19) will include the new Filmmaker Focus: Days of Thunder and the film’s isolated score (along with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio).

Speaking of Paramount, Days of Thunder and Flashdance are joining the Paramount Presents Blu-ray line-up on 5/19 as well (as films #5 and 4, respectively).

Also, you may have noticed Fist of Fear, Touch of Death on Blu-ray from The Film Detective. It’s due on 5/15.

In other news, Sony has set Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 5/12.

Lionsgate has set Guns Akimbo for release on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital on 4/28.

Vinegar Syndrome has licensed a number of catalog titles from MGM. Those are yet to be announced. But they have set The McPherson Tape, Forgotten Gialli: Volume One, Dolly Dearest, and Pale Blood for release on Blu-ray on 4/28. And here’s a surprise: They’re releasing Hal Needham’s Rad (1986) on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray in late May. That’s no April Fool’s Joke—you can see the title on their website here. It’s a limited edition one-time-only release, so get it while you can.
