Now then, last week I reported that Paramount would be releasing Matthew Robbins’ Dragonslayer (1981) in 4K Ultra HD in January. Well, our retail sources are now telling us that Jon Amiel’s The Core (2003) is likely to follow it to 4K disc in March. The title has been available in 4K Digitally for several months now.
Paramount has also just upgraded Martin Scorsese’s Bringing Out the Dead (1999) and Cameron Crowe’s Say Anything... (1989) to 4K Digital on iTunes/AppleTV. That strongly suggests that they could be candidates for physical 4K disc release later in 2023. And if The Core is coming to 4K disc, it’s hard to imagine that Mimi Leder’s Deep Impact (1998) isn’t likely to follow at some point, as it’s also been available on 4K Digital for months now.
[Editor’s Note: After posting this update this morning, Tim called my attention to the fact that Say Anything is actually a Fox title, which makes its updating to 4K on Digital services even more surprising. I’m looking into this to see if I can learn more. UPDATE: Further research indicates that Say Anything... has been available via 4K Digital for a couple years, not unlike the rest of the Die Hard sequels, so this likely happened before the pandemic layoffs when there were still significant Fox personnel working under the Disney umbrella. So disregard that title for the moment; the others are indeed relevant Paramount titles. Pardon the error!]
By the way, Paramount is also re-issuing Rob Marshall’s Chicago (2002) on Steelbook Blu-ray on 2/7.
Here’s something interesting for indie films fans: A24 has just released a new 4K Ultra HD collector’s edition of Dean Fleischer-Camp’s Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021) that’s only available from their online website for the moment. You can find that here.
Finally today, retail sources are also now indicating that Sony will be releasing Sydney Pollack’s The Way We Were (1973) on 4K Ultra HD as a new 50th Anniversary Edition sometime in January. Again, we’ll post more details as we learn them.
