All right, I’ve just spent all week reviewing every single one of the new Star Trek 4K Ultra HD releases, save for the new 6-Movie Collection. So you can now read my thoughts on: The 3-disc Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition: The Complete Adventure, the 2-disc wide release of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition, and the 2-disc wide releases of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, all in 4K Ultra HD from Paramount.

For those who might be wondering, the new 6-Movie Collection includes everything except for the Special Longer Version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture which is exclusive to the Complete Adventure box set. So adjust your purchase plans accordingly. All the details on the other SKUs are in the reviews linked above. I hope you enjoy them all!

Welcome to Monday, Bits readers!

I’ve been hard at work all weekend going through all of the content on the new Star Trek 4K titles, which street on 9/6, and as such I now have three in-depth reviews for you all to enjoy...

Available now on The Bits are my thoughts on William Shatner’s Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Nicholas Meyer’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Robert Wise’s long awaited 4K upgrade of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition as found in the new 3-disc The Complete Adventure Limited Edition box set. All three releases are terrific and should please the veteran Star Trek diehards among you. Paramount has really done right by these films.

For the record, I will indeed be reviewing the single-film 4K UHD SKUs of Star Trek II, III, IV, and also the movie only Star Trek: TMP – DE when they become available, but I probably will not have those discs until much closer to street date.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – Set a course for the final frontier as the newly restored Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition arrives September 6, 2022 on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with a bonus Blu-ray Disc filled with new and legacy special features from Paramount Home Entertainment. The film will also be released in a Limited-Edition Collector’s Set entitled The Complete Adventure, which includes the new Director’s Edition, the theatrical cut, and a special longer cut all on 4K Ultra HD along with special features on Blu-ray. In addition, Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection will arrive on September 6 with all six big-screen adventures featuring the original series crew on 4K Ultra HD. [Read on here...]

Morning, everyone! We expect Paramount’s official announcement of the next wave of Star Trek Original Series films in 4K Ultra HD to drop at any time now, but there’s been an early leak of cover art that we thought worth sharing with you beforehand.

A couple of retailers have shared this artwork this morning (including our friends at HD Movie Source, who are always on the money), so it looks like this could be the final cover art for the forthcoming Star Trek Original Series films in 4K.

If the leak is correct, it means that Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country will indeed include both the original Theatrical Version and Nicholas Meyer’s much-loved 113-minute Director’s Cut as well. The cut is 3 minutes longer, has a few scene extensions here and there, and some of the scenes are slightly re-edited. Added material includes Admiral Cartwright and Colonel West briefing the Federation President on their rescue plan, as well as Spock and Scott inspecting the torpedo bay. [Read on here...]

All right, the big news today is that Paramount has just officially announced the 6/7 release of the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – Director’s Edition on Blu-ray (as we first revealed here on The Digital Bits a few weeks ago). The film itself has been remastered from a new 4K scan, with the participation of director Nicholas Meyer, and will be included on the disc in 1080p in both the original theatrical cut and the slightly longer Director’s Cut, each with 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio.  [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got a couple things for you all today here at The Bits to close out the week...

First, we’ve learned that Panasonic’s forthcoming new Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the DMP-UB900, will feature Blu-ray 3D compatibility. That’s good news for those of you who are serious BD enthusiasts and have been waiting for this unit. It’s only available in Europe at the moment (for around £600, which is about $870) and we don’t have a US street date or SRP yet, but it is coming to our shores by mid-year. Welcome to a new week here at The Bits!  You may have noticed that we didn’t have a My Two Cents post on Friday and there was a very good reason for that, which I’ll good into in a moment. We did, however, post a pair of new disc reviews for you in case you missed them.

And just today, our own Jim Hemphill has tuned in his two cents on the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, a magnificent film that I appreciate a little more every time I watch it, as delivered to Blu-ray by the fine folks at The Criterion Collection. We begin today with Tim’s last Pick-Ups Blu-ray review for this week: A look at Scream Factory’s The Curse/The Curse II: The Bite. Together, these two Z-grade flix were damn near enough to finally break our man’s sanity and send him into a late night reviewing rage (a genuine occupational hazard in this profession).
