The big news today is that Walt Disney Animation Studios has just officially announced the first title in Disney’s planned 100th anniversary celebration this year. Mickey & Minnie: 10 Classic Shorts – Volume 1 will arrive on Blu-ray/DVD Combo on 2/7. Unfortunately, we don’t have the complete list of shorts yet (it wasn’t included in the press release—we have requested the details) but we do know this much:

“Included is the iconic Steamboat Willie, the first cartoon with synchronized sound, in which the character of Mickey Mouse was first introduced as a deckhand on a riverboat commanded by the tyrannical Captain Pete. Also included are Brave Little Tailor, featuring Mickey as a medieval tailor given a daunting task. In Mickey’s Delayed Date, the tardy mouse relies on his faithful pup Pluto to get him to a dance with Minnie. Hawaiian Holiday finds Mickey and his pals vacationing on a beautiful island. Then along with friends, Mickey and Minnie glide through a romantic date on a frozen river in On Ice. And catch five more delightful stories in this legacy collection.”

We’re wrapping things up here at The Bits this week with three more new disc reviews, all of them from Tim Salmons...

First up is Tim’s take on Jorge Grau’s The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (1974), which is coming on Blu-ray on 6/7 from Synapse Films in regular Amaray, and is already available in Steelbook packaging. Tim has reviewed both versions here and here.

Tim has also given a look at Genndy Tartakovsky’s Hotel Transylvania 2 on Blu-ray 3D, a throw-back animated title released back in 2016 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

In terms of release news today, Synapse Films has announced that a new 4K Ultra HD edition of Dario Argento’s Tenebrae (1982) is coming on 7/26. Two versions will be available, a 3-Disc 4K UHD Limited Edition (of 6,000 units) and a 3-Disc 4K UHD “Variant Cover” Limited Edition (of just 2,000 units that’s exclusive to DiabolikDVD). All right, we’re starting the day today with a brand new 4K Ultra HD review from our own Tim Salmons, and it’s a good one: Synapse Films’ outstanding new UHD release of Dario Argento’s Suspiria (1977). The film is a horror classic and the new 4K restoration and HDR color grade are breathtaking. Don’t miss it.

Now then... in announcement news, Lionsgate has just set Rambo: Last Blood for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 12/17, with the Digital release expected on 12/3. The 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio.

Extras on all versions will include 2 featurettes (Drawing Last Blood: Multipart Production Diary and From First Note to Last Blood: Music for the Massacres) and the film’s theatrical trailer. You can see the cover artwork above left and also below.

Lionsgate has also set The Courier for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital on 1/21/20. The film stars Gary Oldman and Olga Kurylenko. [Read on here...]

The Digital Bits and History, Legacy & Showmanship are pleased to present this retrospective commemorating the 40th anniversary of the release of Suspiria, Dario Argento’s influential “giallo” (Italian horror) film starring Jessica Harper, Stefania Casini and Flavio Bucci.

The acclaimed film, and first entry in Argento’s Three Mothers trilogy, recently turned forty, and for the occasion The Bits features a Q&A with Vincent Pereira, who discusses the film’s virtues and influence as well as his involvement with the recently issued Blu-ray release (reviewed here). We’ve got another couple of disc reviews for you today. First, I’ve updated Tim Salmons’ Blu-ray review of Alex Garland’s Ex Machina to cover Liongate’s new 4K Ultra HD release, due on 6/6. It’s selling for just $16.77 right now on Amazon.

Tim has also taken a look at Umbrella Entertainment’s Australian but Region Free double feature of Electric Boogaloo & Machete Maidens Unleashed! on Blu-ray. Enjoy!

In release news today, it appears (based on numerous retail sources and pre-order listings) that Warner’s Kong: Skull Island has been set for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 7/18. We’re waiting on official specs, details, and cover artwork from the studio. [Read on here…]

We’ve got a few interesting odds and ends for you today...

First up, there’s word from no less an authority than director George Miller (via the Screen Daily website), they there may be a theatrical and Blu-ray re-release of Mad Max: Fury Road in black and white, which was his original intent for the film. [Read on here…]

All right, we have a very quick post for you today, as there’s very little news to report (other than all of this Sony Picture hacking business, which is being reported everywhere today) and we’re working hard on those Blu-ray reviews.

Also today, MPI and IFC Midnight have set Argento’s Dracula 3-D, directed by Dario Argento and starring Rutger Hauer, for Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray release on 1/28.
