Welcome to Monday, Bits readers!

I’ve been hard at work all weekend going through all of the content on the new Star Trek 4K titles, which street on 9/6, and as such I now have three in-depth reviews for you all to enjoy...

Available now on The Bits are my thoughts on William Shatner’s Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Nicholas Meyer’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Robert Wise’s long awaited 4K upgrade of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition as found in the new 3-disc The Complete Adventure Limited Edition box set. All three releases are terrific and should please the veteran Star Trek diehards among you. Paramount has really done right by these films.

For the record, I will indeed be reviewing the single-film 4K UHD SKUs of Star Trek II, III, IV, and also the movie only Star Trek: TMP – DE when they become available, but I probably will not have those discs until much closer to street date.

In the meantime, there’s plenty to dig into in this first batch of reviews. [Read on here...]

A couple quick announcements today... Shout! Factory and Scream Factory have just revealed their November Blu-ray, DVD, and Ultra HD slate and there are some real 4K surprises in there.

Look for Loundraw’s Summer Ghost on Blu-ray from GKids via Shout on 11/1, along with a Steelbook Blu-ray of Belle, the Sesame Street DVD title My Favorite Holidays!, and finally Joe Dante’s Piranha (1978) in 4K Ultra HD. On 11/15, look for Robert Zemeckis’ Used Cars (1980) in 4K Ultra HD, along with Shout! Select’s Sunny Chiba Collection on Blu-ray (featuring Yakuza Wolf: I Perform Murder, Yakuza Wolf 2: Extend My Condolences, Bodyguard Kiba, Bodyguard Kiba 2, Shogun’s Shadow, Samurai Reincarnation, and Swords of Vengeance). Following on 11/22 are John Schlesinger’s A Kind of Loving (1962) on Blu-ray, along with Norman Jewison’s Rollerball (1975) in 4K Ultra HD, and Neil Jordan’s The Company of Wolves (1984) in 4K Ultra HD. Finally, on 11/19, look for ANIBO: Spirit of the Amazon on DVD only.

Definitely a couple of gems there, and we’ve added them to our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly.

We also have word that Universal will be releasing the classic Holiday Inn (1942) on 4K UHD on 11/1.

And here’s a surprise: CBS is going to be releasing Hogan’s Heroes: The Complete Series on Blu-ray Disc on 10/26! 21 discs, including all 168 episodes.

Here’s a look at the cover artwork for a few of the titles mentioned above...

Used Cars (4K Ultra HD) Rollerball (4K Ultra HD) The Company of Wolves (4K Ultra HD)

Hogan's Heroes: The Complete Series (Blu-ray Disc) Sonny Chiba Collection (Blu-ray Disc) Piranha (4K Ultra HD)

Finally today, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of film historian Eric L. Hoffman, who was a longtime contributor to Forrest J. Ackerman’s Famous Monsters of Filmland and Monsterland magazines. Eric appeared in many great behind-the-scenes documentaries over the years, including some produced by our friend Daniel Griffith of Ballyhoo Motion Pictures. Tragically, it appears that he died as a result of injuries sustained in a fire at his Los Angeles home. Hoffman was 78. Griffith has posted a remembrance and many of Hoffman’s friends are chiming in on his Facebook page. Thank you for a lifetime of great work, Eric.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned...
