All right, a quick update today...

First, we’ve just posted a trio of new Blu-ray reviews, including my thoughts on Dome Karukoski’s Tolkien from Fox, Tim’s take on Leszek Burzynski’s Trapped Alive from Arrow Video, and Dennis’ look at Michael Chaves’ The Curse of La Llorona from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

And I’m just finishing a review of Zhang Yimou’s Shadow in 4K Ultra HD from Well Go USA and should have that up before the end of the day.

Speaking of reviews, several of you have asked if we’re going to cover the new Disney and Marvel MCU titles that street tomorrow in 4K, including Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Thor, and Thor: The Dark World. We would love to, but unfortunately Disney isn’t making them available to reviewers, which means we’d have to go out and buy them. That puts indie sites like The Bits in a pickle. So the answer is, I don’t know. Maybe. [Read on here...]

Now then... we do have some big 4K news today: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has finally announced the release of Guillermo del Toro’s original live-action Hellboy for release on physical Ultra HD on 10/15. The release will include both the Director’s Cut and the Theatrical Cut in 4K (remastered from the original camera negative), along with a brand new introduction by del Toro and the all-new To Hell and Back retrospective featurette. The 4K disc will also include the previous three audio commentaries with the director, creator Mike Mignola, and the cast, as well as The Seeds of Creation documentary and trailers. What’s more, the package will also include a new Blu-ray with many (though not all) of the legacy extras as well as the Theatrical Version of the film remastered from the new 4K scan. The 4K UHD release will also include new Dolby Atmos mixes for both versions, along with the original 5.1 audio. We assume high dynamic range will be HDR10. You can see the cover artwork above left and also below.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has also announced the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release of their latest DC Universe Movie, Wonder Woman: Bloodlines, on 10/22. The Digital release is due on 10/5. Extras will include the DC Showcase: Death animated short (inspired by Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman), the featurette The Cheetah: Ferocious Archenemy, and a sneak peek of the next DC Universe Movie, Superman: Red Son.

Shout! Factory and GKids will be releasing a new Spirited Away: Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set on 11/12, with the film on disc, a deluxe 40-page book, and the film’s soundtrack on CD.

And Scream Factory has set their John Carpenter’s Vampires: Collector’s Edition for release on Blu-ray on 9/24. The set will include the following all new features: Time to Kill Some Vampires (an interview with composer/director John Carpenter, producer Sandy King Carpenter, and cinematographer Garry B. Kibbe), Jack the Slayer (an interview with actor James Woods), The First Vampire (an interview with actor Thomas Ian Griffith), Raising the Stakes (an interview with special effects artist Greg Nicotero), and Padre (an interview with actor Tim Guinee). Legacy extras will include the audio commentary by composer/director John Carpenter, an isolated score, a vintage “making of” featurette, the trailer, TV spots, and a still gallery.

Here’s a look at the cover artwork for Hellboy, Wonder Woman: Bloodlines, John Carpenter’s Vampires: Collector’s Edition, and the Spirited Away: Collector’s Edition (we’ll add pre-order links as available)...
