Scream Factory bows five new “Limited Run” Blu-rays, plus Night Manager, Disney 4K rumors & more

by

Let’s run down some of the latest Blu-ray and DVD announcements this week...

The big news is that Scream Factory has announced a cool set of FIVE “limited-run” Blu-ray titles (1,000 copies each) that will only be available from the Shout! Factory website (click on the following title links to pre-order). They include a double feature of Deathstalker (1983)/Deathstalker II (1987) and Up from the Depths (1979) due on 8/30, and Message from Space (1978), Timewalker (1982), and The Velvet Vampire (1971) on 9/27. They’re being released as a bit of an experiment by Scream/Shout, partly because new HD masters were available, but also because they want to see if there’s interest/demand for such obscure, deep catalog material. If it turns out there is, they’ll probably make these kind of limited releases a more regular thing.  [Read on here…]

Shout has also confirmed its 8/2 release of Red Sonja: Queen of the Plagues on Blu-ray and DVD. Look for it to include a brand-new interview featurette with writer Gail Simone and members of the cast and crew.

Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has set the 6-part miniseries The Night Manager for Blu-ray and DVD release on 8/30. Starring Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston, it’s based on the spy novel by John Le Carré.

Sony has also set the Jane Austin adaptation Love & Friendship for Blu-ray and DVD release on 9/6, with Digital HD due on 8/16. And they have Maggie’s Plan coming to Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on 8/23.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has set Empire: The Complete Second Season for DVD only release on 9/13. Fox has also set Who Gets the Dog? for Digital HD release on 9/13 and DVD on 9/27.

Dimension Films and Anchor Bay Entertainment have set Clown, presented by Eli Roth, for BD and DVD release on 8/23.

The street dates for Anchor Bay and The Weinstein Company’s Sing Street have changed to: Blu-ray, DVD, and On Demand on 7/26, iTunes on 7/12, and Digital HD on 7/19. Adjust your plans accordingly.

Drafthouse Films and MVD Entertainment have set Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made for Blu-ray/DVD combo release on 8/16.

And Well Go USA will release The Tiger on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital on 8/9.

In other news today, Panasonic has announced that their debut 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the DMP-UB900, will launch here in the U.S. in September with an SRP of $699.99. It’s already available in the U.K. and has been since April, following a CES debut.

And finally, we’re starting to hear rumors suggesting that Walt Disney Studios is getting ready to take its first dip in the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray pool. Multiple sources now are telling us to expect the studio’s first title by the end of this year (with a few retail sources suggesting that Pixar’s Finding Dory may be among the early offerings on the format by the studio). We’ll post more as we hear anything, and obviously update you when any official announcements are made.

Here’s a look at a little more new Blu-ray cover artwork, with Amazon.com pre-order links if available. Don’t forget, anytime you order anything through our Amazon links, you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we really do appreciate it...
