Here’s the good news for home theater and physical media fans: Prelude to Axanar is being released on Blu-ray and DVD soon. It’s not available for sale in the traditional sense, because obviously CBS owns Star Trek and again this is a non-profit project. But you can obtain a copy of the Prelude Blu-ray (or DVD) as a donor perk by retroactively joining the Kickstarter for the full Axanar film production (visit this link for details and click on the Prelude to Axanar logo).
You can see the Blu-ray cover artwork above and to the left there (and also below), which was created by Axanar backer/artist Ron Gamble in the style of Juan Ortiz. The Blu-ray includes the complete Prelude to Axanar short film (21 minutes) in 1.78:1 aspect ratio 1080p video, with audio in English Dolby Digital 5.1 and English subtitles. The special features on the disc have all been produced by Robert Meyer Burnett – who, as you may know, also helped to create the extras for CBS’s great Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise Blu-rays. The extras will include the Dispatches from the 23rd Century: Making Prelude to Axanar documentary featuring the entire cast and crew, 2 full-length audio commentary tracks with the cast and crew, the film’s teaser trailer, and a sizzle reel. You can go here to the donate page on the Axanar website to learn how to make a retroactive donation that will get you the Blu-ray or DVD along with many other perks. Remember, you’re not paying for the Prelude Blu-ray itself – the money is going to help fund the full feature film. There are all kinds of benefits to being a backer. The sets being built for Axanar are going to be used to hold classes (open to backers) on indie filmmaking later this year, there’s going to be special events where you can actually come and stand on the bridge set of the U.S.S. Ares (from the film) and more. If you’re a fan, becoming a backer allows you to participate in lots of fun ways. And you get a Blu-ray or DVD! Tough to beat. Again, here’s the link to the Axanar donote page where you can find out how to get the Blu-ray, here’s a link to the Axanar website with daily updates (as well as weekly podcasts and video blogs), and be sure to like the Axanar page on Facebook as well to chime in and follow along. Meanwhile, you can watch the complete Prelude to Axanar film in HD here (What Trek fan in their right mind wouldn’t want this on Blu-ray?)…
