Also today, Lionsgate has officially set David Lowery’s The Green Knight for release on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and Digital on 10/12. The 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. Extras will include 3 featurettes (Boldest of Blood and Wildest of Heart: Making The Green Knight, Practitioners of Magic: Visual Effects, and Illuminating Technique: Title Design) and the film’s theatrical trailer.
Note that Lionsgate is also releasing their Apocalypse Now: Final Cut 4K in Steelbook packaging exclusively at Best Buy stores on 10/19.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment still hasn’t officially announced their Middle-Earth: 31-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition, but we expect that any time now. In any case, we’ve confirmed that the set will include all of the existing audio commentaries on the film discs, plus the 26-minute Cannes presentation reel (from 2001) and the Alamo Drafthouse cast reunion on a Blu-ray bonus disc, but none of the previous Appendices or Costa Botes content, nor the special features from the Theatrical Edition releases, all of which were included on DVD in past editions. (The set will also not include the previous Blu-ray 3D editions of The Hobbit films, but that was not unexpected.) As you can imagine, the reaction we’re hearing from Blu-ray and 4K enthusiasts—not to mention many Rings fans—ranges from underwhelmed to irritated. “How can they call it Ultimate when they’ve gotten rid of all the great extras,” is a common refrain. And on that point it’s hard to disagree.
The set does at least contain the newly-remastered Extended Blu-ray editions of The Lord of the Rings films, but those are now available for pre-order on Amazon separately, also with a street date of 10/26. The Middle-Earth: 31-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition is also available for pre-order on Amazon now, so here’s the cover artwork for both of those SKUs (for those who are interested in them—click the images to visit their Amazon pages)...
Also today, Arrow Video will release Shinji Somai’s Sailor Suit and Machine Gun on Blu-ray on 11/16, followed by Richard Friedman’s Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge on Blu-ray on 11/23.
Shout! and Scream Factory have revealed their November Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K slate, which is set to include Punky Brewster: The Complete Series (DVD) and Come True (Blu-ray and DVD) on 11/2, When Calls the Heart: Holiday Double Feature (DVD), Old Henry (Blu-ray and DVD), Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Complete Series (Blu-ray), and My Salinger Year (Blu-ray and DVD) on 11/9, Patema Inverted (Blu-ray and DVD), M. Butterfly: Shout Select (Blu-ray), and the Krampus: The Naughty Cut – Collector’s Edition (4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray) on 11/16, and Mel Brooks’ Dracula: Dead and Loving It (Blu-ray), The Eight Hundred (Blu-ray and DVD), Little Fish (Blu-ray), The Show (Blu-ray and DVD), and Sesame Street: Wonderful World of Friends (DVD) on 11/23. Note that the more elaborate Neon Genesis Evangalion: The Complete Series – Limited Edition Blu-ray box set (which we mentioned yesterday is coming from GKids and Shout) is expected to street on 12/7 (SRP $219.99).
In other release news, RLJE Films will release Slaxx on DVD and Digital on 9/7.
Finally, our friends at Kino Lorber Studio Classics have continued to announce or reveal great new upcoming catalog titles for release on Blu-ray in November, including Number One (1969) and Counterpoint (1967) (both with Scorpion Releasing), Homebodies (1974), The Man Doctor (1940), The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946), The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1935), and The Secret of the Blue Room (1933) on 11/2, Breakheart Pass (1975), Chato’s Land (1972), The Old Fashioned Way (1934), It’s a Gift (1934), and The Bank Dick (1940) on 11/9, The Accused (1949) and Night Has a Thousand Eyes (1948) on 11/16, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (4K Ultra HD) and Night Gallery: Season 1 (1969-1971) on 11/23. Also coming in November (street date TBA) is Deported (1950).
And recently revealed as coming soon from KLSC are Some Like It Hot (1959) (4K Ultra HD), In Bruges (2008) (4K Ultra HD), The Crime of the Century (1933), New Year’s Evil (1980), The UFO Incident (1975), Double Door (1934), The Brass Bottle (1964), Without Warning (1980), and To Hell and Back (1955).
