Pick-Ups for the Week of August 15, 2016

Welcome to a new edition of Pick-Ups!

Back this week some more reviews. Nothing new to report personally. I would like to note that I’ll be out of town for a couple of weeks in September, so don’t expect a column or reviews much from me around that time. Until then, I’m catching up on a ton of reviews (as is Bill), and I’m preparing myself for some upcoming events here at The Bits for October and November.

More on that when we get closer to that timeframe.  [Read on here…]

Pick-Ups for the Week of April 11, 2016

Welcome to a new edition of Pick-Ups!

Thanks for joining me. This week I’m going to catch up on some horror/sci-fi/comedy releases that we’ve missed along the way.

It should be an interesting lot of titles to check out.

As usual, we’ll be rolling each review out one at a time all week, so be sure to check back for new ones.  [Read on here…]

Before we begin this afternoon, our own Tim Salmons has turned in another Pick-Ups Blu-ray review for you to check out, this time featuring a look at Synapse Films' Steelbook release of Dario Argento’s Tenebrae (1982). Do check that out here.

All right, the big news today is that Paramount has just officially announced the 6/7 release of the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – Director’s Edition on Blu-ray (as we first revealed here on The Digital Bits a few weeks ago). The film itself has been remastered from a new 4K scan, with the participation of director Nicholas Meyer, and will be included on the disc in 1080p in both the original theatrical cut and the slightly longer Director’s Cut, each with 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio.  [Read on here…]

Today is review day here at The Bits, and we’ve got a fine batch for you. To kick things off, I’ve updated my review of DreamWorks’ first film ever, The Peacemaker, from 2010. We’ve also updated a pair of great 2011 BD reviews from our dear friend Barrie Maxwell on the old Bits website: Warner’s Citizen Kane: 70th Anniversary UCE and Ben-Hur: 50th Anniversary UCE. Finally, we have a pair of new Blu-ray reviews today too from our own Tim Salmons, including Synapse’s fine new Prom Night: Special Edition and a Robert Altman classic that’s now available from our friends at Criterion: Nashville. All these discs are well worth your time and the reviews are pretty fine as well, if we do say so ourselves, so we hope you enjoy reading them!  [Read on here…]

Well folks, we hope you all had a nice Halloween… and we sure hope you all enjoyed this year’s Hell Plaza Oktoberfest.  Dr. Jahnke and the rest of The Bits team pulled out all the stops to make it a goodun for you all, so there you go.  We sure appreciate your readership.

Now then, today’s update is going to be a quick news roundup from the last couple days, and then we expect to be back next week with more reviews, including a couple titles you guys have probably been waiting for, including Warner’s Man of Steel and New Line’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition among others.  [Read on here…]
