Today’s update is a quick one, as we’re doing a lot behind-the-scenes work here at the site today. (I’m personally digging into some interesting upcoming title rumors.) But we do have some good updates for you on forthcoming 4K Ultra HD titles, and there’s a bunch of new 4K titles available for pre-order.

First up... a great piece of announcement news: Our friends at Kino Lorber Studio Classics have just revealed that they’re going to be releasing Stanley Kubrick’s B&W war classic Paths of Glory (1957) on 4K Ultra HD sometime early in 2022. Street date is listed as “coming soon.” As many of you will already know, the film stars Kirk Douglas as a French army commander in World War I. It’s a brilliant piece of work, and should look great in 4K.

While we’re talking Kino Lorber Studio Classics, the company has also provided updates on other classic catalog titles that are coming soon to 4K. Out of Sight (1998) is currently due in Spring 2022. To Live and Die in L.A. (1985) is awaiting the attention of director William Friedkin to grade and approve the Dolby Vision HDR master. And Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil (1958) is now set to arrive on 4K UHD in February. [Read on here...]

Well, the new week is here. And unfortunately, in the wake of our post on Friday about Walt Disney Home Entertainment’s catalog 4K plans (or lack thereof), the news today isn’t good either...

Per Deadline this morning, WarnerMedia has begun a round of layoffs and restructuring meant to help the company survive the pandemic and its resulting economic downturn. Jeffrey R. Schlesinger (President, Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution), Ron Sanders (President, Worldwide Theatrical Distribution & Home Entertainment and EVP, International Business Operations), and Kim Williams (EVP and Chief Financial Officer, Warner Bros. Entertainment) are all “exiting” the company per this arrangement. Ron Sanders has been with the company for almost thirty years, going all the way back to the early days of DVD. So his departure is a big deal. (Our friends at Media Play News have a good profile on Sanders up today here.)

But here’s the rub from the linked Deadline piece... “about 600 employees across multiple divisions are expected to be let go, starting today. Warner Bros Entertainment is believed to be heavily impacted.[Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got a few good bits of news and such to wrap up the week...

First up though, we’ve just updated our Release Dates & Artwork section with tons of new Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, whenever you pre-order literally anything from our links here at The Bits, you’re helping to support our work and we surely do appreciate it.

Now then, we have word that Mamoru Oshii’s much-loved 1995 anime Ghost in the Shell will indeed street on 4K Ultra HD from Lionsgate on 9/8 (though do keep in mind that this date—while leaked by multiple retail sources now—is not yet officially announced by the studio). What’s more, it’s now available for pre-order on Amazon (here and also by clicking on the art below the break).

Also up for pre-order in 4K from Lionsgate is Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream. No street date is yet listed, but sources tell us it’s likely to arrive on 10/13. Again, you can see the cover artwork below. [Read on here...]

All right, there’s not a whole lot going on today news-wise, so we’re busy working on new disc reviews.

But we did want to check in briefly with a new interesting odds and ends.

To start with, we have a sneak peek at temp cover artwork from our retail sources (in Europe in this case) for Universal’s Spartacus and Jaws on 4K Ultra HD, which are expected to street widely in June or July (street date TBA). You can see Jaws at left and both of them below. This should be close to final, but know that it’s not actually final until the studio officially announces the titles.

Also coming from Universal on 6/2 (only at Best Buy stores in the US) is a new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook version of Ron Howard’s Apollo 13. You also can see that below. [Read on here...]

All right, we’re starting the new week off with a new History, Legacy & Showmanship column from our own Michael Coate, who’s celebrating the 30th anniversary of John McTiernan’s The Hunt for Red October with a new film retrospective that features a look back at the original theatrical release, the 70mm engagements, and a new interview with author and film historian Eric Lichtenfeld. Enjoy!

Meanwhile, our friends at Kino Lorber have announced some fun new Studio Classics titles that are coming soon to Blu-ray, including Joe Dante, John Landis, Carl Gottlieb, Robert K. Weiss & Peter Horton’s Amazon Women on the Moon (1987) and Peter Hyams’ Narrow Margin (1990), along with a trio of titles newly announced for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 5/5—Fred Coe’s A Thousand Clowns (1965) and Me, Natalie (1969—featuring Al Pacino’s first screen role), and Guy Hamilton’s An Inspector Calls (1954).
